AdamW
help, I have just been quoted between £3000 and £3500 for a recon engine for my van what #~=+s me of the most is that the van only has 62000 miles on it I am not sure what has gone but have been told its terminal, the oil light came on whilst on the M1 combined with loss of power and once stopped (after 6 miles) the engine was making a knocking noise on tick over (yes, it still runs) the van is a 2001 Astra sportive 1.7TD can the price quoted be right? pin
Sounds pricy to me, what element of that is labour? Certain speciality garages do engine swaps all day long and won't quote stupid money for doing the work. If its a total new engine you'd have to assume bottom and top end gone with probably a cracked head/block - otherwise you'd just replace the bits. Lord Geordie
If your oil light came on and you got a knocking afterward then your sump ran dry of oil No oil causes the shell bearings to overheat and due to them being alloy composite they wear VERY fast to save the Crankshaft. Reason for Oil loss is what baffles me unless you have a crack in the sump or your oil filter sprang a leak. Take it for a second opinion first as if it's just Shells and the sump it will be cheaper than £3000 to put right. OR as kirky says get down to a Salvage yard dealing in new crash damaged cars and get an engine (about £500) i would think. LG

AdamW
Guys, sump didn't run dry, still loads of oil in it, the guy has given me the option of £150 to look at current engine to see whats wrong with it, I still think 3k is too much for an engine and thats for a recon not a new one! Andy W
If it has oil in, sounds noisy and the oil light is on probably a faulty oil pump or oil pick up strainer if not serviced regularly but the damage would already be done if still noisy. I would ring round for quotes for a "short" engine, that is a bare bones engine and remove all the good bits from your own engine onto the new engine or ask the garage how much to fit the engine if you source one, I bet they say no or quote ridicilous amounts. An engine can be DIY changed in a weekend if you hire an engine hoist. Lots of small garages will swap engines for cash if you source one yourself. AdamW
Better news... although i would like your option.. heathrow engine services can supply a recon engine with all new aux internals parts for £995+vat with 12 months/ 12000 miles warranty.. all sounds very good but i have a friend that took a Vito merc van to them and was total stitched up by them, so I am not happy using them, anyone else used them? only other problem is the garage will not fit it! although this won't be a problem after next week as my mate is talking over and will fit it! just means i have to wait a week.. bit of a pain but not 3.5K's worth of pain! al4x
don't do it whatever you do, this lot are complete shisters and have been on watchdog the lot! What you've had is a loss of oil pressure so either a faulty pump or blockage somewhere thats then led to the big end failing hence the knocking. These engines are the Isuzu ones and I can safely say not their best work we used to run vans with them ok the mileages were big but the head gaskets failed every 40K without fail. I'd look for a second hand one from a breakers (if you can see and hear it running before removal so much the better) get it fitted by ayour mate then I'd sell the van plus points is after you've had it changed whip off the cylinder head and bung it on ebay and you should get some money back!
