Winchester .17 HMR ammo

Recommended Posts

I've just bought some Winchester .17 HMR, it was the same price as Hornady and reading the box, it claims a "Clean burning powder" Does this mean my rifle and mod won't get gummed up with the filthy deposits the Hornady leaves behind? Has anyone used the Winchester ammunition and would you like to tell me what your thoughts about it are please?

Hornady was available but I've begun to shy away from the red and blue tip following the reports on here, I've had no end of split cases and while I understand this is ok and acceptable, I'm not that comfortable with it.

Thanks.

In my 452 it shoots about the same group size but lower and to the right. It's as clean as Hornedy

I am hoping to give these a go when I get my fac back, hornady are still the ones I buy but would like to give these a try, has anyone on here

used federals v shock equivalents these are nigh on impossible to find / source

i have used the v shock and found them very accurate but like yourself i cant find anyone who stocks them.so will stick with the hornady..never had a problem with them so far...

Thank you for the replies, and the for the tip I may have to re-zero

My local RFD, Simpsons stock federal, they are more expensive than Hornady (£14.50 for 50) and are apparently loaded by cci? I think it's Federal which are slightly slower than Hornady and Winchester claiming 2530 fps as opposed to 2550 fps; there's a comparison video on youtube which makes for interesting viewing https://youtu.be/ApgWDaSFfKQ

learning the Winchester .17hmr ammo is not loaded by cci I was hopeful that there would be no more split cases and a little less scrubbing to get everything clean again.

The individual manufacturer has little or nothing to do with split cases, that is the whole flawed manufacturing process, which remains exactly similar with all manufacturers.

Batch issues and quality control have an effect, but split cases will not go away simply changing to another manufacturer, monitor the ammo over a long period and the odds are the % will come out the same as CCI.

As for the powder, well, there are options, and new/cleaner powders are being developed all the time, just look at the massive array available, so it is possible it may be marginally cleaner, but, ALL rimfire is dirty!

:good:
