Ballymac
Ok everyone looking for some useful suggestions on booking a shooting holiday. There are 3/4 guys interested in a short break shooting some pigeons, we checked out a place in Scotland after it was recommended to us but he is sold out until August 08  We would like to shoot some pigeons before that. Have done a quick search on google, but I thought I would get more help here. We are travelling from N.Ireland so the easiest option may be to travel by boat, carrying guns and cartridges, although perhaps someone on here knows the rules and regulations regarding easyjet and carrying firearms? So if it is to be by boat somewhere within a few hours drive of the port.
Poacher
Easy jet are cool about letting you take guns on their flights, you have to have airline safety standard cases for them etc, (i.e Aluminium case with keys and possibly a combination lock) just ring them and let them know. Then when you book in you get taken off somewhere discreet and the police come over, check the guns numbers with the European firearms pass, then they take them to the plane in a locked cage, to get them back you need to see baggage security at the other end and they should have them (or in my case when i came back from Italy they came out on the carousel I nearly shate myself) Hope this is of some use.. P.S don;t bother bringing ammo i think it is more hassle than its worth + with the added weight you may get charged for ! just buy them here
Ballymac
Thanks poacher, if we were to fly would not bring cartridges over with the rates easyjet charge per kg over your limit  Regarding the European firearms pass is that required as we are only coming over from N.Ireland, not Rep. of Ireland ? or would our normal certificate be used. Highlander
Most of the 'Irish' guns I know fly over. It's soooo cheap nowadays. BUT check that your chosen airline will fly with guns. EJ do I believe. Bring your own guns and if from NI then use your usual SGC. Buy cartridges here. But hey don't expect to come over here and shoot all our pigeons just 'cause you've murdered them all at home
M ROBSON
None of the Northern Irish shooters we get fly over, they all come by ferry, but then we are only a couple of hours drive from the ferry ports. I guess it might be different travelling to England. You can easily get cartridges over here. Mark.
dazza
you just need your FAC you don't need a European Firearms pass. Where are you thinking of going? I was thinking of doing the same sort of thing
Ballymac
Highlander, a lrge flock of pigeons over here is seeing 10 birds so want to have a go at these large flocks you guys over there seem to have Dazza, was recommended a place by a local gun shop owner, but when I tried them they were booked out until next aug. As mentioned coming from norn irelan using a ferry, Scotland would be probably the easier option as you would have a vehicle and could carry more equipment clothing and even cartridges. As has been mentioned EJ allow guns, but then you are limited with the amount of stuff you can take with you, the need to hire car etc. So I am looking to see if it is possible to get a 2/3 day shooting break, Aberdeenshire seems to have a few guided days available. Thanks eagleye. I knew you guys on here would be more helpful than a google search
Teal
Stena line no longer let you carry cartridges. It's a new policy in the past 2 years.
Safe Chris
You could do worse than try this place in Devon mate, it's snided with partos but there's crows and bunnies aplenty too. http://www.luckyardfarm.com/ Is a bit isolated but the shooting and accomodation are okay. Wherever you end up, good shooting.
Big Al
Ferry companies do let you take cartridges, but only in the old "slow boats." The rule that came in about carrying shells on the ferries applies to all fast ferries as they have aluminium hulls. Apparently the cartridges constitute a fire hazard in aluminium hull boats. They haven't figured out that all that petrol and diesel in car tanks are a much bigger fire threat! Don't let on though, or else we'll be pushing our cars on soon. I have done both over the years - ferries and plane - and unless you are going to the south of england, there is not much advantage to flying, hiring a car and all. I plump for the ferry if I have a reasonable choice. Incidently, SACS (I am not a member) do a great discount with P&O - about 20% - if you quote their ref when booking, and present your membership card at terminal. I know this is true, but have never used the service! FAC is all that is needed for northern shooters, but anyone travelling from ROI needs a special permit to even transport the guns through NI. To get this apparently you need two NI sponsors. Even if you have a European Firearms pass, I have heard of southern shooters being sent home as they have no permit to transport guns through NI. I have usually only to show my FAC in Scotland / England to buy cartridges. There is no paperwork though.
Ballymac
Big Al, thanks for info on the SACS have just joined it as a member of local shoot so that might help. Have looked at cost of doing ferry or flying, and the main benefit seems to be time saved. Do you know if we would be allowed to take guns on the fast boat, but not take any cartridges. I can travel on any form of transport but travelling on these ferries makes me ill. Can manage the fast boat but not the slow one Safe chris, thanks for the suggestion had seen that one advertised but as we are only looking for a short 2/3 day trip this time it would need to be somewhere easily accessible to b&b (b&b = birds and beer)
Frostbite
Have you tried Pigeon all day long?....going over in august...cant wait No problems with shotguns+ammo, just has to be a "slow" boat.

I have done it quite a few times! Just inform security staff when checking in and they do the rest (make sure you have your FAC!) Have a good one!
