misser
Have got an improved and quarter choked cheapish English boxlock and was thinking about taking it on the marsh; am aware that it does not have the fleur de lys on but was enquiring if anyone else puts small steel shells through a similar type of gun...thanks...atb....misser

However, I then saw the, "cheapish". Only point (assuming all things are equal) therefore which will prevent you is chamber size - you're going to need 2 3/4" minimum. Many older (and possibly now cheaper because of age/condition) English guns were 2 1/2.
Guest topshot_2k
Use bismuth, you can use heavier loads than steel, it kills cleaner and won't damage your barrels
motty
Use bismuth, you can use heavier loads than steel, it kills cleaner and won't damage your barrels My advice would be that if the gun had a 2 3/4" chamber and was in good condition, then steel may be the best choice. The steel should provide a tighter, denser pattern (with more pellets) and will be far more cost effective. Saying that, if it were me, i'd probably buy a gun more suitable for modern wildfowling. misser
thanks gents...yes it is 2 3/4 chamber and there is a bit of meat on it.....mainly for teal so would only be using small shells....

fenboy
Use bismuth, you can use heavier loads than steel, it kills cleaner and won't damage your barrels I think plenty would disagree that bismuth kills cleaner than steel.
Penelope
I have never been a great fan of bismuth and having used it quite extensively in my 2 1/2" English boxlock (all that I could use) I would step up to 4's as opposed to the 5' and 6's that I have used, if I use it again, although at c. £30 a box that may be some time. I do have better kills with 1 1/4oz steel 3's through my English boxlock 3" magnum. I think plenty would disagree that bismuth kills cleaner than steel.
