Gun security out and about..

Hi All,

 

I've been looking for some kind of lock for my shotgun and airguns while in the car. I don't plan to leave them in there long, just have some situations where I may take my Air rifle and Shotgun to my permission, and want to leave one or the other in the car - depending on what's about and what I plan on shooting. However I don't want to just leave them locked in the boot of the car. I'd want to somehow secure them to a strong-point in the car.

 

I have browning trigger lock, but that's only good for securing the gun against use. I want to secure it to something to deter it being lifted from a car.

 

Working in IT we have these Kensington locks that are really useful for locking Laptops to desks, I want a similar thing for a rifle or shotgun. I've seen the barrel locks, but they're no good for a semi-auto.

 

I guess what I'm looking for is a plastic coated steel wire with 2 loops at each end that can be padlocked. But I'm not sure if there's anything that exists. I guess I could look for some kind of bike lock, but wondered if there's something especially for guns..

 

Any help would be useful.

In the boot of most cars there is a luggage ring or something similar, my friend chains his spare gun to this ring and uses a small padlock.

Nothing a serious set of bolt croppers couldn't shift, but it is a deterrent.

 

As I can only afford one gun, I don't have this problem.

That's just the thing I was after - but rather thatn using a chain I was wondering if there were some platic coated toughened wire kinf of thing that can be purchased..

Some of the cycle security locks may be worth a look.

 

There are those with plastic coated chain and also some rigid ones that look like padlocks with very long hasps.

 

It would be easy to wrap some tape round the metal rods, if you were worried they would scratch the trigger guard.

if you don't mind spending the cash you could always go for a bull box. i've seen them in various magazines.

 

basicly it's a safe which comes in the form of a drawer, which bolts to the base of the car boot.

It depends on what you are trying to prevent.

 

Any gun locked in a car might be a problem because they car itself can be stolen, taken somewhere and the guns removed at leisure.

 

If it is to stop casual theft, someone smashing a window and rummaging around in the boot, then a cable lock might suffice - its unlikely someone would have bolt cutters with them to remove the guns. The problem still remains that the car could then be stolen once the guns are discovered.

 

A brattonsound auto safe would probably be the best option. Not cheap but there is no way a casual thief could have the guns away, and even if the car was stolen it would be a serious pain to get the guns out. You'd also have the peace of mind knowing you did more than you were required to do if the worst happened.

 

What you have to remember is if they are locked in a boot out of sight, nobody would have the first clue they were there, you would just have to be careful where you put them in and took them out.

 

If I have to leave mine in the boot for a short time I tend to remove the forend, keeping it with me, at least that way I know that if stolen it can't be fired.
