Fuji Shooter
There is a mobile Snap-on lorry that visits the garages on our trading estate. I had a look inside yesterday for the first time. Why is it now I feel the need to own tools?

viking
well got rained off today at 10pm so had a good day in the garage, got some good work done and continued to amaze myself, it wont amaze others but it has me to say 6 months ago changing a wheel was about my limit.parcel force came at 10.45am with my steering tubes after only ordering them yesterday so put the track rod ends in with no effort whatsoever and put 2 of them on, . . viking
next job was to try clean engine and gearbox with my jet-wash that decided to lose 50% of its power today, so dragged it out of the garage and gave it a good blasting, well as good as it was going to get with a **** jet wash, took it back in the garage and dried it off and had heater on it for half hour. then like you do i decided i wanted the gearbox off, where to start? worked out what nuts and bolts i needed to undo so had to get it on the hoist to get to the bottom bolts, kind of propped it up with wood blocks as didnt like the fact my arm was going to be under it, not after the chassis incident, managed to get all nuts and bolts off with no incidents lowered it back down and got the rest off, separated , left gearbox on the wheels and kept engine on the hoist, i was one happy chappy i can tell you . . . . Fuji Shooter
Hey Mr Viking, how is the rubbing down going? Are you going back to bare meal or just flatting off the existing paint? Only asking as I need to start mine prior to sending it off for paint, what grade are you using on the DA? Cheers
la bala
Looking good Viking you may wish to check your core plugs at this stage, they sometimes rust from the inside out.

Cheers hey Mr Freak think im using 320 and 180, it probably wont be the finished product and i have no idea what it needs to be like for painting, but its a start and should knock my bill down a bit, im just smoothing it off really, doesn't take that long really if its a nice surface like a bonnet, mine has been repainted at some point in a slightly lighter brown but it was still no match for the sander Looking good Viking you may wish to check your core plugs at this stage, they sometimes rust from the inside out. cheers la bala, them sort of jobs are for my mate, he can strip and engine with his eyes shut, me, i dont even know what a core plug is i will be sure to mention it to him though

Fuji Shooter
get some 500 on it then, when it smooths off go down to 320 then 180, That's the plan, mind you I might get one of the 3m Purple wheels, I reckon I you could go complete bare metal in under an hour. viking
wow, that would make my life a lot simpler. as i dont understand sanding down on cars i did originally think that surly it would be best taking it down to bare metal and starting with a decent smooth surface, yhen prime it yourself ready for painting, or take it for painting as bare metal,

viking
what i want to know is, is it ok to take it down to bare metal ready for painting??
la bala
Agree with ditchman on the aluminium, also you will need to etch prime it. If you do use etch primer make sure you havnt any window glass nearby, etch primer loves glass.

viking
with regards to a torque wrench iv decided to go for halfords pro, draper or a sealey, any thoughts on any of them, 30-210nm
Paul223
Out of that choice draper, sealed used to be good quality but anything I've seen recently seems to be made of chocolate Halfords stuff is pretty good value too
