Not that I know exact what that is apart from brownish. But would consider a different colour??

viking
i think i would benefit from being painted, nothing to garish or to shiny, probably try find out the colour it is now and what sort of paint it is and re do it in that,

la bala
Steady on pal. One thing at once. Only joking viking, get yourself plenty of scrap pieces of varying thicknesses and go for it. You will get to know by the sound if you are set up right, but you have a welder mate to show you. Enjoy.
ditchman
sounds like frying bacon..............watch out for the gas flow.............i see you have pressure gauges...add to it a flow meter...they are cheap.....dont forget to turn off the gas when finished and release the pressure out of the gauges................ if you have any probs there are some top mig boys on here who will gladly help you.. keep plenty of contact tips about good side cutters blow out line regualy check feedroller tension and serationd on the rollers keep mig wire free from dust and rust / damp and job should be a gooden
viking
Well it's been a funny couple of hours messing about but things have gone from bad to a little better. And as for the sounds Iv definitely learnt when it's bad compared to a little better. Practice makes perfect so they say. . End result. Not to bad for first attempt on my own after a couple of hours. It's not as easy as I make it look.???? Edited February 7, 2016 by viking
ditchman
you are getting there...............try spot welding...you will need it for thinner metal...........hold the gun at nearly 90 deg' burn a spot and as you loose sight of the red metal spot move the gun 1/4" and do it again and repeat .............you might have a spot function on the set....should be marked as a seris of lengthening dashes on the control panel.. once you have done or learnt how to do a compleate run try weaving it from side to side.............. Fuji Shooter
Well done with the welding. I wouldn't even attempt it as its someone's actual job.
viking
it will be a long long time before would ever weld anything that needed welding properly, im purely just messing around,,
la bala
Viking, its a good idea to keep your workshop doors closed when welding, the slightest draft will blow the gas away from the shroud giving you a carp weld. On saying that you should have good ventilation to keep the fumes off your chest. ATB
viking
with the door being a roller shutter i just left it open a couple of inch to let the fumes out and keep the wind out,
viking
decided to chop my bumper up to practice my welding on, i didnt plan on re using it so not wasted
viking
then had to grind it up to clean it before my attempt at welding again. some of it wasnt to bad for my second time
la bala
Make good use of your welding visor, if you get arch eye its a bit uncomfortable to say the least
viking
wouldnt dream of not using my mask/helmet. was taught from a young age at my dads garage to never look when he was welding
ditchman
you are getting better very quickly................a little bit slower ....steadier and turn down the wire speed a smidge.............. thats looks if there is galvanising on it.....that will upset your results.........and the fumes will make cyanide gas...which will make you sick and flu'ey..
