Rewiring a standard lamp - advice needed please

Bought a Victorian oil lamp stand which has been converted to electric but the wiring is tatty.

Now, I know nothing about electrics.

What I was thinking of doing was getting one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Plug-In-4-Metre-Flex-Plug-Kit-with-ES-E27-Light-Bulb-Lamp-Holder-Lampholder-/231457659923

cutting the plug off, threading the flex down the stand, and then rewiring the plug.

In a nutshell, is this going to work or am I going to get electrocuted?

Cheers, Ross

A couple of years ago I rewired a lamp that the missus bought I used the same type of flex that Paul223 has pictured as it was fitted with 2 strand flex (ie non earthed) but of a similar type. I also changed the bulb holder to a more modern one brass replacement one so that it had a proper earthing point, ended up spending more on the replacement bits than the missus did on the lamp but I now know it's not going to kill anybody when they go to switch it on!

my advice is ..............get a rubber mat (like you have in a car) then lay it on the floor near the base of the lamp....then teach all the occupants to stand on the mat when switching the appliance on...before doing so ...have a meeting with all the people likely to use it and go carefully through the SHE-Q file ..highlighting all the relevant method statements...site specific or otherwise...risk assesments............................you should be fine after that

(the muther-in-law is not required to attend any safety briefings...in incase of site visit remove afforesaid mat)
