Ira
Its been very frustrating down here, the harvest came in, then the heavens opened and its only just stopped raining. In-between the the showers I watched pigeons going into wheat stubble and so set up this morning where I had been seeing them go in.... A complete waste of time, no pigeons came close. After a quick decamp and a cuppa I headed out to some bean stubble, hoping to get a few birds just to make myself feel better. There were hardly any flying about and I nearly didn't bother but the sun was out a light breeze and I gave it ago. Unfortunately all I had was 8 full body decoys so I set em out and hoped for the best, I tried the horseshoe with plenty of gap but it didn't work, so before I gave up to go and sulk I moved the decoys in closer and tightened the pattern with no gap in the horseshoe, lo and behold I got a couple, out with the whirly out got a few more, set the bouncers and soon had all the decoys replaced with dead birds. I was not in the best place, no strong flight line but I know they flit about down there and so I ended up picking up 33 pigeons and the dog got some nice long retrieves done. She's just over two and a half, black lab bitch and my first one. Got her doing left and rights and pretty much working to the back command now, plus she's great with kids. It also gave me a chance to use my new beretta A400, Im really liking it and even with an open choke Im getting some good distance birds. So long as I don't over think the shots its going well. Cranfield
You got a reward for persevering, well done. The bean stubbles have been poor for me this year, the harvest is so disrupted that the birds are mostly dropping into uncut laid wheat (most now only fit for animal feed) and some on unharvested peas that will now be ploughed in. The fact that the fields are sodden is not making getting about very easy. The dry weather forecast for the next few days may improve things. Ira
I struggle to get my dog to retrieve geese never mind kids.... Brilliant, i didn't write that one very well. She's more obedient than the kids though and is always sitting ready for her dinner, more than I can say for the kids, mind you they, my children, enjoyed a pigeon bolognaise tonight and ate the lot so thats a result!!
