Pup has developed the squirts.

His stools havent been "hard" for about a week or so, thought it was down to the food change from when we got him, but that is 2 weeks ago now.

He was on spillers, but as we couldnt get it where I am we switched to IAMS. The breeder gave us a bag of spillers stuff to "integrate" the new feed and this was done over a course of a week.

Pup is on about 1/2 pint of lactol and abour 150grams of IAMS puppy food over the course of the day, fed 4 times in total.

He is fed at 6am, 12am, around 5pm and about 9pm.

Called the vet on friday and they gave us a course of canicure or something like that (for upset tummy).

He "went" this morning and wife said it was a good "consistency" rest of the weekend its been like a melted MR Whippy......He then went again before she went to work and it was back to squirty...

There is no blood or anything like that, and I wouldnt say it smells any worse....He has been farting a bit,,,,(thats what Im telling the wife... :good: )

Hes on fresh water every day and is urinating fine.

Hes his "usual" self, up for playing, sleeping, etc etc. Doesnt seem sluggish or "hot".

Should I be dropping the lactol from his feed programe, hes 12 weeks old tomorrow.

Any help or advice would be appreciated, vet said if not back to "normal" then bring him in for a set of antibiotics.............................

My pups were 12 weeks old on Sunday - never had lactol. Started them on soaked food at 4 weeks old while still on their mothers milk, the following week still on soaked food & only with their mother at night time & at 6 weeks old the pups were on their own, so they have been on solid food since they were 6 weeks old. 4 pups went to their new homes at 8 weeks old, just the bitch pup left which I kept. Tried her on soaked food at first, but she prefers it dry - so she has been on dry food only for the last 4 - 5 weeks. Feeding her Beta puppy food & she's on @ 250g a day. She has half of the food @ 7:30 (no one to feed her mid-day), then the rest split into 2 more meals @ 5:00pm & 9:00pm.

If he is in good spirits and does not look drawn down or mopey...is not running a fever and has good color in his gums, then I would do the following.

First off get rid of the lactol at 12 weeks unless there is a distinct lack of something in his diet he does not need it. Do not feed him anything else until tomorrow 12pm. This will empty the stomack and intestines out and hopefully get rid of any bad bugs. Be sure he has access to his water through the normal hours.

Tomorrow cook him a cup of plain white rice for each feeding with a dollop of plain yogurt mixed in. The rice is very easy of the digestive and the yogurt starts the good bugs working again.

If at any time he looks distressed get him into the vets.

It may be worth collecting a stool sample from his last squirts and getting that to the vets today to have it checked for Cocciddiosous , gardia, or other bugs that do require medication and that are common in puppies.

Good Luck,

Sorted.

Cheers Dan.

Someone did mention scrambled egg, so I gave him a single egg this afternoon when I got home.

Ill starve him for the rest of the day and then give him rice tomorrow dinner time.

Ill stop with the Lactol, Wife wont be happy as she had to fork out 16 quid for a big tub on Friday.

Guess we can use it over a "period" of time for a "milky drink"....

Hes definately "himself", went home today at dinner time and he was all over the place, excited, happy and playful.

His usual sleep patern is the same, gums are a nice pink, his nose is normal and generaly seems to be fine.

He does have a tendancy of munching on stones and soil clumps, and the wife did notice some mice in the garden (not rats) under the bird table. He tends to have a good sniff around there which I assume he is just picking up on the scent.

We have now "humanely" trapped said mice (wifes idea not mine.....I would have shot em.......) and removed them to somewhere else. Assume that he cant catch anything from mice......

Im a bit dubious about getting him to the vet over the case of the squirts, he isnt dehydrated and is drinking a "normal amout of water".

Ill see what happens with the rice and get rid of the lactol. Then start back on the normal food

Well, how is he looking Lad?

NTTF

Went all sloppy again last night, put him back on his other food minus the milk.

He did a full day on the rice and yoghurt mix, then was using his normal food with a spoon or two of yoghurt.

But saying that, I went home this afternoon a bit "later" than normal and found 2 solid ones on the floor......

So at least that was a good thing.

Took delivery of his run and kennel today, will have to do some nailing and weather proofing of the timber tonight. So that problem of messing the kitchen should no longer be a problem....

Hes due back to the vets on Monday for his next set of jabs, if he is still squirty then Ill get them to check him over.
