687EELL Combo 20/28

Thinking about buying my first non s/s blunderbus, and looking at an o/u small bore and thinking about a Beretta 687 EELL 20/28 Combo. Does anyone shoot have any experience or advice about these guns, be it the combo or the EELL or EELL Classic at all? Would really welcome your folks opinions before I go and whack so much of my hard earned down on such a thing.

Things I'm thinking about are;

 

1) Does the difference between the EELL and the EELL Classic (They only do the combo in the standard EELL) make the Classic that much more desirable (that rounded pistol grip sure is nice and pretty!)

 

2) Are there any compromises made in order to have both 20 and 28bore barrels on the same action, balance, weight etc?

 

3) Will I really not be undergunned with a 28bore in most game situations (normal non uber high pheasant, pigeon), ie can one actually use 28 on game without there being ethical issues as you're not being fair to quarry?

 

4) Would i just be better going for a really lovely 20 bore, good for everything, job done.

 

5) Should i go 30" or 28", I'm quite a shorty at 5'6"!?

Of my experience a 28 bore will take most quarry you will not be out gunned if you are on the money.....

I don't like the combo the 20 handles like a 20 and is fine to fit the Action which iq 20 bore action the 28 bore barrels have to much metal in them and spoil the guns handling. If you need a 20 and 28 bore buy 2 guns if not buy the one you want.

 

EELL are very nice handle well and look pretty in either form it's a question of taste in which you prefer, but the guts are all the same as all the rest of the 68 series.

I have a EELL 20bore with 28 bore combination and found it to be a lovely set up. My gun is a game version with 29.5" barrels for the 20 bore and 28" for the 28 bore. As the barrels are set onto a 20 bore action, the 28 bore has to have larger wall thickness and so the slightly shorter barrels help to keep the balance of the gun similar with both and they are each fitted with multi chokes.

 

I tended to use the 28 on partridges and early pheasants and the 20 for pheasants and wildfowl (including Canada geese) and really enjoyed shooting the gun. After a lifetime of shooting I decided to give up live quarry shooting at the end of the 2013-14 season and now only shoot clays, so my gun is for sale if you are interested.

I love my 687 EELL, it fits so well. You must make an honest assessment of your shooting ability and what you shoot at, if you miss no more than a hand full on a driven day with a 12 or 20 then by all means go for a 28, it will add an extra challenge that will make shooting average birds harder and therefore more satisfying. If you are a 1 in 5 with a 12 then a small bore will wait till you do enough to get down to below 1 in 3. I have seen birds killed behind me with a 28 at ranges I would not have believed possible.
