Foxwit
So I've accepted a day on Cornwall driven woodcock shooting. Ive been advised that to use a size 8 shot any thoughts as I was just going to take 30gram 6's through my 12 gauge?
Pykie
I usually use trap cartridges on woodcock and snipe days, 28gm 7.5s. Never had a problem with them. Nice dense pattern against the small fast birds
Stonepark
Fibre clay loads are ideal. 8's will kill to 30 yards and give good pattern with open chokes on fast moving woodcock as when side on they present a target only 1/4 size of a pheasant. Your 30g 6. Individual pellets will kill to 50 yards. But pattern for woidcock will fail at 30 yards with open chokes and although it will bring birds down, it won't kill very well. Foxwit
Thanks I have a game gun with fixed 1/4 and half chokes. There is the chance of a pheasent or two on the shoot as well. I'll pick up some 28g 7.5 fibre loads.
Nmb
We had a woodcock day last weekend and I used 32 gram 5 dark storms through a 28 inch silver pigeon with full chokes. I shot 5 woodcock/Snipe all of which were stone dead and non spoiled. Some of the guns using clay loads were pricking birds which I don't agree with , I am not saying that I am right and they are wrong however just thought id share my experience from last week. One thing for sure is they are wonderful birds and very testing to shoot! Nick Edited December 3, 2015 by Nmb
welshwarrior
28-30 gram 7s for me I've used 8s before and they where ok but found some clay loads don't kill as well pthers where good but never struggled with supreme game.
