jef
Hi all, First post but have been watching most days for the last two years. I have recently decided to apply for a center fire rifle, to use for vermin control over 1000 acre rough shoot I share with my brother. It would be used mainly for foxes, and the odd hoody should the chance arrise. I currently have a .22 rimmy and have owned a .17HMR in the past. I want something that will also be capable of shooting roe (in Scotland) should I advance on to them in the future. I also want something that is cheap for ammunition without home loading. My .22 is the latest CZ with 16" barrel and I love it's compact size and weight. I would be looking for similar attributes in the center fire. It is also my third CZ and I am a big fan. So...................the question is.......which I'm sure has been asked a million times........ Which rifle should I go for???? Thanks James
Oly
First you need to know what calibre...any preferences??
Dunkield
First post but have been watching most days for the last two years. Welcome to PW at last James. You might want to fill in your profile when you get a chance. As for the gun, why not another CZ?
JRDS
All depends on your budget and the ranges you will likely be shooting at??
Oly
As for the gun, why not another CZ? Not another CZ surely!! Maybe PW should be sponsored by them! Let's try not get into the quality/cost issue this time!
jef
Calibre Any of the .22 center fires, I am open to opinions. Profile Updated. Budget I work hard for my money and I like nothing more than spending it so how is £500 for the whole package? Range Large fields, up and down, 150 yards max probably. Anything else??? JRDS
150 yards max then a 222 or 223 would be good for you and be deer legal in Scotland and over on AirgunBBS there a couple of s/h 222 Tikkas for sale that would do the job for you also, screwcut as well I think. If you want to buy new then with your budget you are looking at the CZ probably being your best option. ATB John
kip270
Cz in .223 job done
jef
Ok. I've had a quick look on tinternet and the .223 seems generally more expensive than the .222. Is this correct? What should I expect to pay for ammunition? Will there be any difference in weight? JF
stevethevanman
almost everyone will say 222,223 or 22-250 over the ranges you are shooting at, I have to agree CZ is your best bet, and being the proud owner of one myself, I can say they are good quality rifles
jef
These are the calibres I was considering but how do I decide which one? Bullet cost? 222, 22-250, or 223? Weight? 222, 22-250, or 223? Rifle cost? 222, 22-250, or 223? Bullet variations? 222, 22-250, or 223? Noise? 222, 22-250, or 223? I forgot to mention that there are 20 odd horses on the shoot, and although I would never fire within a close vicinity of them, noise is obviously important. kip270
Go for the .223, no weight difference between calibre's, will shoot 50-70 grain bullets depending on rifle twist rate. The .22-250 will be louder than the .222 or .223, if noise is an issue ask for a moderator as well.
tikkamark
I have a .223 with t8 surpressor and it is very quiet once or twice have even shot two foxes side by side one not having a clue what just happened his mate 223 is not expensive over here american eagle hollow points are in and around €12 for 20 and the bullets i use sako 50grain soft points are €18 for 20 but are worth every cent as they are a very hard hitting round

M ROBSON
CZ550 in 22-250 You won't regret it.
jef
Right, I need to rule at least one of the calibres out of the game and that's gonna be the 22-250 (sorry M Robson). As far as the other two are concerned, I think I'll see what's available at the local gun shop first incase there is a bargain. Thanks for the warm welcome chaps, keep the comments coming.
