islandgun
going to look at one of these at the weekend old but clean, any advice or tips on purchase please cheers IG
figgy
Check on parts availability for it. Honda make good Qauds but they all wear out break at some point, need fixing. The main thing for me with two wheel drive Qauds is how light they are, if the get stuck can you drag it out by yourself. Had a look online and there is a dedicated Facebook club for them. Farm where I shoot has one, not much travel on suspension and brakes bind and need replacing. Bit long in the tooth now and I think unless it as a bargain I'd look for something newer with four wheel drive. rodp
Most TRX 300 parts are available, either new or used. Check bottom of frame for rot, can be replaced (got one here I've just done) but time consuming and you need some gear. Check wiring and make sure it all works, very often you get "It just needs the battery charging mate, ain't had time to do it" then you find the wiring is bodged up by someone without a clue (got one of those here as well) Check simple things like gear lever been welded on because they used it loose, check diff casing for cracks (weak point on TRX 300 and TRX300 FW). Apart from that just a general check round. 'Twas Honda's best selling quad , that and the fw, they sold loads and loads. Still a big favourite in the States apparently, only weak point being diff casing but you can fit the stronger axle from other models if you so wish. This model and the TRX 350 D made Honda's name in quads.
islandgun
thanks for the replies gents (only just seen them) i bought the quad in question, everthing seems to work as it should, although there does seem a bit of binding in the brake department My wife skidded on ice and went into a lampost in my old shogun this morning and suffered a broken wrist/arm which has needed some surgery so very pre-ocupied with her and the kids at the moment cheers Ig
rodp
Sorry to hear about the wife, hope she gets over it quickly. Ref the quad, brakes binding is common on quads that haven't had any maintenance, Odds on it's the rear, can be a pig to get in to but simple to remedy when you do. Harry Callahan
What age is it? If it's been worked hard there will be no rear brakes... the diff' splines wear losing all drive - you take the axel off and turn it round so it drives off the splines which should be on the brake. Honda changed design early 2000's so you couldn't do that. Old Hondas are pretty bulletproof - just watch engine oil on dipstick... itl most likely burn abit, they all do. And check oil in diff and bearings. Dont worry about brakes - get into the right gear before going down a slope and you don't need them. I grew up on quads on steep hill ground, plan ahead and don't do anything stupid youl be grand! Hope the wife's OK, and makes a speedy recovery. Have you noticed the frame changes over the years What you think are two identical quads are entirely different when the plastics are off Best thing to do with rear axle is fit either 350D or TRX400 (? check first) axle
islandgun
thanks for the advice men, the brakes have sorted themselves out with a bit of use, guess its stood around to long, the best bit is to see the smile on the face of my 15 yr old son when he realises that there is more to life than the xbox, and my daughter enjoying the freedom from exams etc and being in charge of a machine (they have done a course on the safe use)
rodp
My kids did the quick course on a quad, I told them "If you roll that it will either really hurt of kill you". Luckily they both listened it appears, what they do out of sight though I don't know

When your born into farming, and have been a shepherd all your life you get to know about quad bikes, and how to sort them ;-)
