Penelope
The Welsh Government is seeking views on either removing white-fronted geese from the quarry list or continuing to support a voluntary ban on shooting Greenland white-fronted geese. The public consultation ends on 7th March. http://basc.org.uk/blog/key-issues/have-your-say-on-white-fronted-goose-proposals/

panoma1
There has been a very well supported voluntary moritorium on shooting GWF (in fact all grey geese! In order to avoid any mistakes!!) by all the clubs shooting the Dovey estuary (the GWF wintering grounds in Wales) for many many years, however the numbers of GWF continue to decline, this decline is NOT as a result of shooting therefore placing them under statutory protection from shooting will have no effect whatsoever! In fact it wrongly implies shooters and shooting is responsible for their decline, instead of blaming shooting and shooters I suggest the Welsh Government look to the GWF breeding grounds and investigate why they have been so poor in reproducing, for answers.....they may then find the real reason for their decline I have commented to the consultation to this effect! greylag
The decline in the GWF numbers has nothing to do with shooting pressure. The Welsh Government know there has been a voluntary moratorium on the geese for years. If they put a ban on GWF the next move will be to stop all shooting of grey geese for fear of mistaken identification.Short end of the wedge. The Welsh Government love to be seen to be doing the right thing even when it is obviously not. BASC must take control of this and make sure the outcome is the correct one.
