Half a ton......sort of!

Recommended Posts

On Thursday the farmer contacted me and a pal to say the pigeons were attacking his rape on two fields that are about a mile apart. He reckoned that the best chance of success was for each of us to cover one field so that's what we decided to do.

The field I was in is a very large field ( well it's three actually) quite undulating with plenty of sitty trees along the hedgerows. I opted to shoot from under an old oak in a dip on the basis that it would be a little sheltered from the wind, which was a cold easterly on Thursday. I set up at about 2.00 and had a steady flow of birds, some singles, some pairs and some almighty groups of 50+ all coming into the decoys nicely.

I managed 20, mainly hitting the singles and pairs. I'm not used to big groups coming into the decoys and when they did I shot quite badly because I kept changing the bird(s) I was going to shoot at.

Still, 20 was plenty to carry back up the hill to the car!

Today I popped out to a field at the end of the village that I've noticed a good number of pigeons showing an interest in. They seem to be there from about 3pm onwards so I got there for half one to be set up in time. This time I set up under an oak in the middle of the field with the rotary and just 5 birds from Thursday. After about 20 mins the birds started to come, the same as Thursday, in pairs and big groups. It was very windy and they jinked about a bit as they came nicely into the decoys. Again, I struggled with the big groups but ended up with 34 which I was pleased with.

So 50+ this week, first time that's happened for a while.

Nice to see the flocks breaking up a bit and decoying, happy days.

A good result. I often make a mess of big groups coming into decoys too!, always convince myself a pair will be simple then struggle to keep a bead on any one bird. {my excuse anyway}.

March is a good month for pigeons on rape and i think wil see decent bags more frequently here now.
