dazzyboi
Order a genuine scope, not a rip off one, but get it from america on ebay. I got a Simmonds White Tail Classic 6.5-20x 50 for £105 cant buy them in this country, fantastic scopes for the hmr worth alot more than £

deadeye ive
One advantage a very expensive scope has over ones in the lower end market is the ability to withstand sudden shocks . In daylight I can't tell the difference between my £150 webley platinum and my £400 Hungarian /£550 German schmidt .It's only at night in twilight and lamp conditions that those extra pennies show their worth . TBH IMO if you've arranged a stalking trip ,to include travel accomodation costing several hundred pounds the last thing you want is your equipment letting you down which is probably the main basis behind most spending alot of money on their choice of glass . For HMR whereby there is hardly any recoil a £150 scope will be ideal and there are some cracking Hawke and Simmons versions in that price range However if you have been born with a silver spoon in your mouth and funds are unlimited then get the best Swaro/Smidt/Khales or Zeiss etc you can afford Through my own financial; limitations I have used Scopes around the price ranged mentioned earlier for years with no problems
Dead-Eyed Duck
There used to be a rough rule that to do a gun justice the scope should cost roughly as much as the gun. As someone else has said, if you are mainly going to shoot in daylight, then most scopes will do the job. But, if your gun is more accurate than you are, and if you are going to do lots of shooting at dusk/lamping, then get the best that you can afford. If you are going to shoot at dusk don't get a scope with fine cross hairs as you will struggle to find the cross hairs, and time is important. There is no sin in getting what you can afford now, and trading up later - that's what most of us do if cash is tight. I've just bought a 2nd hand Swaro 6 x 40 for my 0.22 rimmy, and the clarity at dusk is far better than what I had on before - and that scope wasn't too bad. naddan28
Although the rules for scopes don't apply for airguns imagine a £1k scope on a theoben/daystate air rilfe! Overkill galoure.
plinker
you will need at least 6-12 mag 6-20 if possible. as someone else said the wtc on ebay from the usa take some beating for the money i got 1 new delievered to my door for £98. i got a nikkon rangefinder new for £100 and a harris 3-9 sln bipod again new for £40 delievered but you do run the risk of paying a custom levy so far i have got away with it plinker
