winter wheat

Pigeons often use a wheat field that is close to a rape field to rest and digest their food before returning to the rape for more.

While i will not use the word "never" to say they that they don't actually feed on green wheat shoots, i have never seen it in their crops. This past couple of weeks the most food i have seen in their crops other than rape has been clover and i am sure that a good pasture field will produce some shooting and is worth looking out for.

The first time i will seriously be looking at wheat as a good shooting field will be when it is fully grown and has some laid patches on it. This can produce some great days shooting,

The only good times I have over 'winter wheat' is when the previous years crop in that field was beans. Because combines are pretty useless in picking every bean from the plant, the rest drop to the floor of the field. Once the woodies find them, days can be just as good as spring drilling! :D

Hi mahmood,

Ye i think its worth it. Your bag numbers will be fairly low but you will get a bit of sport. Make sure you are dead under a flight line, and use as many decoys as you can get.

I have often decoyed on fields of winter wheat and fields that have not had pigeons feeding on them and it can be good fun. It is very important to be under the flight line because the pigeons wont waste their energy to come and have a look if they are 100 yds from the pattern.

I expect your bag will probably be no more than 20, and thats if ur under a main flight line.

hope that helps,

Mahmood...

Just go! a day shooting fresh air is better than work... is it not....

Put up plenty of deeks on the wheat. Even if the birds are not feeding avidly on it you will get some inqusitive birds come within range.

The birds I shot last week were full of it... not shoots though but sprouting wheat about 1/4 ins long to just splitting husks.... They must be getting it somewhere.!

Take a couple of crow deeks as well if you have some or 1/2 doz slices white bread... brings the daws in a treat....

FM.
