iano
You guys seem to know your motors, although for a forum of people who know your motors, there are a lot of Land Rovers owners on here...... Anyway, a while back (3-4 weeks) the blower motor went on my car (bmw e90). Dropped it into an indy mechanic who said it was only full of water (leak from the windscreen seal) and that he dried it out and it worked. Charged me a couple of quid but was happy. Blower motor stopped again last week and I didn't want to have to pay him so I assumed it was water and dived in with a couple of torx screwdriver heads. Got the motor out; bone dry. Stripped it down, spun it on the spindle a few times then put the lot back together and stuck it back where it came from. Thing worked. Any ideas? I'm assuming if it goes again I'll just replace it but it wasn't wet and I couldn't see any water or anything in it. Edit: also became the victim of a German sense of humour as they decided to include two extra wires that don't connect to anything or do anything. Was going mad trying to figure our what I had missed when putting the dash and trim back together. Edited September 1, 2016 by iano

Vince Green
The fan motors on those cars are running all the time with the climate control on. There is no air fed ventilation I don't know about BMW but on Mercedes the motor brushes wear out, its a common problem. I had it happen on one of my cars last year. The symptoms are exactly as you describe The brushes can be changed but I just bought a new assembly from Bestparts about half the price that MB wanted Edited September 1, 2016 by Vince Green

Are the brushes replacable? Or is just a matter of biting the bullet and getting a new one.
Dano0404
I would have thought the fan is a brushless motor. It's more than likely the resistor that changes the speed it's the bit on the back of the motor. Have a look at this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=r-wCmLRfGmo

I took out the resistor and looked at it - couldn't see any burnt or corroded contacts.

There is a lot on the MB owners club website about changing the brushes and I did buy some but in the end I bought a new unit for £120(?) Don't know anything about BMWs suggest you google the problem and have a look at what people are saying. Budice
Common fault on BMWs for the heater resister or 'hedgehog' to fail. Google it, cheap enough to find them in the aftermarket
