Which trail cam to buy?

I'm going to invest in a trail cam. I don't need super special quality images because all I want it for is to identify which animal(s) are laying in to my feeders and rattling all the wheat out onto the floor. As soon as I know what's causing the problem I can hopefully introduce counter-measures!

I'm always cautious about buying the cheapest thing I can find on eBay because often you end up disappointed, but don't want to lay out unnecessary money if a cheaper one will do the job.

These are the three cheapest types I can find on eBay:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371701084620

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/142117144190

Anyone got any of these to give pros & cons?

Or any other general advice on trail cams because I'm pretty ignorant on the subject!

Thanks in advance :)

I have had just about every one. Started with the cheapest and pretty much any of them will do what you require. I ended up getting fed up with the cheaper ones as I wanted them to send me pictures and had loads of issues as everyone else has had with them setting them up for the U.K. and ended up getting the Bushnell @ £350

So anyone of those will take decent pictures for you to go and get sim and download to laptop or see on screen if they have one.

Hi

I bought a cheapish Ebay one, its set up on one of my Pheasant feeders now. I can post it to you for a couple of weeks use if you want, for a small charge £10?

As long as it isn't damaged or pinched, you can post it back after you've finished. Just a thought, as you may not want to buy one and only use it once!

Thanks very much chaps, some good info there.

Hammo that's a really kind offer which I appreciate. What I'm like though, when I get a gadget I will just want to keep on using it so might as well cut the middle man and buy my own, save messing about! Really do appreciate the gesture though mate :)

Will chew it over a bit more then make my choice I think. Thanks a lot :)

Jim

This is the one i got off *bay, paid about £60 + £5 for an SD memory card. Brought it in today, works perfectly! got some nice daytime and night time vids and stills. A roe buck is the culprit on my pheasant feeder! Not in season now though. Last time it was a muntjac, he tasted lovely.

Will try and upload pics, I wouldn't spend any more for one; not for what you and I need it for.

Hammo thanks for your input, I went for the Ankke model but the one I received was actually a higher spec than the one listed. It has two side PIRs and 15MP resolution. Bit of a dodgy moment when I first powered it up. Really strange, it kept powering itself off, then eventually wouldn't turn back on at all. Buy cheap buy twice came to mind. I requested a return but then the next day out of desperation tried it again and it seemed to function fine. Sure it wasn't me being a doofus but hey ho.

I put it out by a feeder yesterday afternoon in the mode where it takes a photo followed by a video. Went back today for a look and I'd got some results! Only the daytime pictures were any good. I'd set it too low to the ground and the night vision lighting was bouncing back and overexposing the shots, but there were a handful of events which triggered it so hopefully after relocating it today I'll see some night time results.

Got a great shot of a cock bird apparently peering right into the camera! Then a squirrel and magpie visted, then the cock bird was back under the feeder - with a deer standing not 4ft away. I'm amazed how the pheasant didn't give a monkeys about the deer; it just carried on feeding whilst the deer stood still, scenting the air and twitching its ears around.

I think I might have to increase the video time length up to 2 minutes because I didn't get to see what exactly the deer, squirrel and magpie were doing to the feeder (if anything) but I'll see how it goes as I play around with the camera and learn how to use it better.

Quite chuffed with my new toy :)
