krazy_horse
The farm I shoot on only has 2 barley/wheat fields - is it worth me planning a trip out at this time of the year? Having looked online, December seems to be a quiet month for shooting pigeons and they are supposed to be eating early rape. What else are they eating at this time of the year? Maybe I should be sticking to my air rifle and picking off the crows hangin around the barns eating the cattle feed Thanks for the advice in advance. Wingman
I went out on Sunday and it was pretty active, although we sat under a known flightline and caught a few coming into the woods to roost (was about 3:30pm). Not much on the fields though but did see lots of pheasants, shame it was Sunday!
lakeside1000
The last few times out I have had very few birds on the rape, but those that were there were full of hedgerow berries and even a few late acorns, so I guess they are still in the woods and hedgerows, You may get a few over new wheat or barley but better to look for a flight line out to rape or new drilling's, The weather is changing again tomorrow , getting much warmer , we normally see birds hitting the rape after the frosts set in but with this weather anything could happen, I doubt we will see big numbers now until after Christmas or the new year, just keep watching and be prepared to act as soon as you see them showing interest in any specific area, they may not stay interested for long before they move onto somewhere else. Knocking off a few crows with the air rifle is a much better bet at the moment.
krazy_horse
So i decided to go out after all this morning after some pigeons. On arrival there were plenty flighting from all trees surrounding the field i was planning on shooting over. I quickly set up my hide and put out 10 shells with decoy socks over them. And one homemade bouncer. After just 5 min the first one arrived and thought my luck was in, shot it and scared off a load that were circling. After that, only took 5 more shots for the whole time i was there 8.30-11.30. They were about, but just not on my permission. There was plenty of wind and overcast which made it ideal conditions, just none came my way. Frustrating! Think i'll go to another location next week and get them as they come in to roost.
