Proxy
Hey all, Just wondering I'm almost set on getting a springer as I shoot on rough grounds.. I've purchased a few books one is Training Spaniels.. just wondering this would be my first puppy and I'm just a bit unclear of the early stages from lets say when I get the puppy around 11 weeks old to 7 months, what should I train him ?what should I not do? What play activities should I do ? Any other advice would be be good! First post here! Thanks.
Mochastorm
There are a number of good DVDs available which deal with all stages of training from 10 weeks old to the finished article. I've seen a few and found that the Adrian Slater and David Lisset DVDs were the easiest to follow. No amount of reading or watching DVDs can however be as good as spending time with a good gundog trainer. They can assess your dog, but more importantly how you are with it. They will provide all the advice that is relevant to you, and hopefully answer all of the above questions.
ShootingEgg
One game not to play is tug... by doing that you will create a hard mouth. And then getting a retrieve off your dog will become that game.
washerboy
Heard tug mentioned in retriever training , also used in recall training?
Old farrier
Heard tug mentioned in retriever training , also used in recall training? Are you for real? I can only assume you have just got back from the pud ☹️ Anyway OP Lot to teach it in first months Important for pup to know what to do to please you don't tell it off for bringing you stuff even if it's something it shouldn't have merely substitute it for something that you want it to have Definitely don't hold it and let it pull it (tug) Stroke it underneath its chin Say sit Lifting its chin up as you saying it gravity will place it in your hand Lot of other stuff Walking to heel And play Exercise training should be no more than a minute for every week of its age It's easy to overdo it with a pup Anyway keep us posted Or send big bird a pm Hope this is a little help to you All the best Of
