tikkamark
This question is out of curiosity more than anything but do all tikka heavy barrels have a narrow section 16mm in the middle of the barrel and then it tapers out to 22mm for about 200mm to the end of the barrel i had to build up a couple of mil of insulation tape so that the rear bush on the t8 isnt loose.Any one notice this or is it only on the tikka t3 tacticals? JohnGalway
22.04mm where my barrel leaves the stock, 22.04mm halfway between stock and muzzle, 22.04mm last spot I can measure the barrel before the muzzle. Tikka T3 Varmint Stainless barrel. But thanks for giving me another use for my new digital calipers! Hope you get Tactical replies soon Mark

Yeah, Eoin has a Tactical, throw him a PM if you haven't already. I think Vegeta may have a Tactical or Varmint, not 100% sure which. Any particular type of ammo Mark? I'll have a look at some empties.

You mean like in this picture below? All are Remington Accutip 55grain empties. 14 out of the 15 have a flatter edge on one side, depending on how you look at them. Remington UMC 50 grain JHP were pretty much the same as the Accutip. Hornady 55 grain V-max Moly are rounder, but I would say 7/8 of the 15 I looked at have the same type of "edge" but to a lesser degree compared to the Accutip (didn't bother with the picture this time due to being on dial-up...). Hornady 75 grain BTHP were pretty much the same as the Hornady V-max I don't have empty AE cases yet, but give me a decent calm day... tikkamark
Yeah john thats the same with my emptys i wonder what causes that? You would imagine they would all be totally round.......once there hitting exactly where im aiming im not concerned though
chrisv
"Yeah john thats the same with my emptys i wonder what causes that? " My Howa flattens one side one the case neck, it's the ejector spring smacking the neck into the side of the receiver before it flips it clear. Maybe yours is doing the same. I can stop it happening by applying a bit of finger pressure to the case as I pull the bolt back.
JohnGalway
Chrisv, I must try that. Am not bothered either, if they came out like flattened Volvic bottles I wouldn't care as long as she groups well. Conors Remmy does it to a muc lesser degree on AE cases than my Tikka, compared them today.
Kramer
but do all tikka heavy barrels have a narrow section 16mm in the middle of the barrel and then it tapers out to 22mm for about 200mm to the end of the barrel.......................is it only on the tikka t3 tacticals? Yep, only on the Tacticals. Not ideal for heavy telescopic mods like the T8 etc. The final 75mm of my Tactical tapers from 20mm to 22mm approx, at the muzzle (.223). I have a t8 on my tactical and i had to put some black insulation tape on the barrel to take up the slack on the rear bush otherwise after a few shots it could come loose and move about with very bad results any idea why the barrel would have been made this way kramer would it be to save weight? Vegeta
I have seen and fired Kramers rifle and I can confirm that it does indeed taper (wider) out to the end. I have the varmint and the barrel is even thicker than the tactical. I had to use fine grit sand paper to make the plastic bit fit over the barrel, annoying but it fits quite well now. I have no idea why it is like this. Just trade it in against the TRG
tikkamark
it must be done in order to save a bit of weight surely ?Im not complaining i hit a rabbit spot on at 210yrds yesterday evening i cant praise the kahles scope i have on my rifle enough very very clear right up until dark
