mick miller
For use on boar in the UK and abroad. Anyone offer any advice on this calibres suitability and acceptability for wild boar shooting in the UK and in France? I also wondered whether it would be acceptable put down for woodland stalking, although it is somewhat of a beast. I have a longing for something under lever, I need to scratch that itch. The other alternative is a 30/30 although that may be a bit undergunned for wild boar.
mowdy
I have shot the 45-70 which is ok but I have the .444 m which is a far better round for deer in the uk and a can be used on my gun club indoor range where the .45 cal is prohibited I use mine abroad on boar as well there is a bit less recoil than the 45-70 and is quicker on shot recovery and in marlin rifles you get a extra round in the magazine 5+1/
Bangbangman
I had a 45-70 Marlin 1895 and currently stalk with a Ruger no.1 in 45-70. Great guns, capable of taking anything on land, see Big five with Marlin 45-70: http://www.leverguns.com/articles/lupo/lupo.html You need to know your drop and drift as those big, slow bullets are like mortars! Meat damage is entirely reasonable, bit messy on smaller quarry: Barnes list a "Ruger 1 only" load that is velocity-legal in Scotland (not an issue in England and Wales.) For boar, the Marlin 1895 makes more sense than my single shot Ruger. The same in 444Marlin also a good option. Try and get a pre-Remington rifle (JM stamped) as QC dropped off afterward. My old Marlin Cowboy: The BC of the "flying ashtrays" probably not great! I doubt you'd regret it, I haven't. Benthejockey
That does look very cool! If only we didn't have such daft gun laws in this country is have to have one of those!
mick miller
Hmm, mind made up. I looked at the 444 but it wouldn't meet the criteria for several of my club comps. With the 45/70 I can shoot in those too.
cervusman
I have a Marlin guide gun in 45-70 that has a ported barrel so it helps to reduce muzzle flip which I will be using the next time I go driven boar shooting.
mick miller
I've found a Winchester 1886 in 45/70 in my price range, sure it's a Miroku modern repro but what are peoples thoughts on this rifle?
mick miller
Actually the Marlin 1895 may be more versatile and allow for the date use of more powerful cartridges.
