stuartyboy
I've done a few searches but keep getting contrasting info coming up. Could anyone who has a 9mm garden gun please advise if its suitable for humane kills on squirrels up to 10 yards or so? And how quiet it is? I've been asked to help with close range pest control but in a noise sensitive environment. I would appreciate any info from folk who use/have used a garden gun. tetlee
I have fired 9mm Flobert rimfire cartridges from a garden gun but only as part of a test on an inside range. As far as I recall the sound level was about the same as standard velocity .22 LR. The pattern spread and impact marks against a plywood backed military figure 11 target from the 7 metre CQB firing point suggests to me that you would struggle to get consistent kills on full grown healthy Squirrels at 10 yards...or so., let alone humane kills. If you are firing up through the leaf canopy, in my opinion, you would be even less successful in effective pest control.
Walker570
A good accurate 177 airgun will kill much better at 10yrds ...if you can shoot. First set your squirrel up to sit still for a few seconds, therefor a feeder of some kind is essential ... check out the squirrel shooter videos on youtube and check out the feeders they use. Then head shots only, job done. Last evening I head shot a squirrel at 20yrds with my TX200 177 and it was dead on the spot. The 9mm would not be my choice, only for sorting one out in one of my catch cages but even then the 410 is better. An air rifle with a moderator is in my view the tool for the job. On edit, just a thought a live catch cage might be your answer, then you can get close to finish the job. I have nine set up in my 10 acre wood and they are very successful. Fitted with a peanut feeder at one end the song birds can enjoy it in safety as well. Edited September 9, 2017 by Walker570

Hendrix's rifle
Thanks for your input, thinking the garden gun may not be the answer for this particular job As good little tools they are I wouldn't recommend one for what you intend to do. Best off with a 410. Shooting in barns at rats no more than 5 yards fair play, there great fun then!
Graham M
I had one of these way back in 1970 and they were bloody useless as a tool for killing anything over 5-6yds. As the name suggests they were a garden gun which I think was used for shooting at birds in fruit trees without harming the fruit (at 15yds they wouldn't harm the birds either) At 10yds an air rifle would probably be a better choice.
