Stock treatment

I've got a stock that I can tell has some nice grain and colour to be brought out, but I'm not sure what oil to use. Obviously I want to avoid anything too heavy so if it takes a few applications that's fine - but I'm looking to darken the wood a touch and bring out the grain.

Any suggestions? Anybody done anything like this before? I have an oil I got with the cleaning kit which I apply in order to protect it after a shoot. It adds a nice temporary glossy effect but nothing as rich as what I'm after, and obviously not permanent.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks!

Heard a lot about linseed oil.

Any opinions on Birchwood Casey tru oil? Do I need anything 'special' since I also want to darken the wood a little bit too?

And, as an aside - just in case, does anybody offer a finishing service for the lazy likes of me who would pay the extra for someone else to do it properly?

I use "rapid oil" much better in ky opinion the tru oil. Apply very small amount with finger tip then vigorously rub it in with palm of hand. The heat caused by palming gets the oil into the grain and helps harden it. Leave until 50% of oil has absorbed then palm in the remaining 50% on surface. Leave for a couple of days then repeat until all of the oil remains on the surface after a day or so. Palm that in ...job done

Yes tru oil is an excellent product and I wouldn't use anything else on my chisel handles wouldn't put it near my guns mind.

Trade secret is a good commercial oil but any quick drying quick fix is a bodge and if you want to do it properly take time and be patient it's not a job to rush.
