To add to the recent US invasion to the board, I'd like to introduce myself. My name is John, and I've been serious about upland bird hunting for the last 6 years or so. I have a soon-to-be 4 year old Brittany named Belle. Come the end of this month, I'll be picking up my new German Shorthaired Pointer pup (will be named Greta).

Most of my hunting is split between stocked pheasants on our state game lands and preserve hunting, however the last 2 years I've been more actively pursuing grouse. We have a cabin up in North-Central Pennsylvania where I spend some time each fall chasing the grouse.

Here's an older picture of my daughter Emily and I, along with Belle, out for a morning hunt. Emily is 8 now, and she is a huge help with dog training and loves coming along for hunts with me.

Nice to meet everyone and I look forward to learning alot from the group over here.

Yes, I've been with Upland Journal for a few years now. As for what is included in my "upland" group, it's basically pheasant and grouse. On the preserves that we can hunt, you can hunt quail and chukar also, though most of us just focus on the pheasants. During dog training activities we use the piegoens, quail and chukar alot. To my knowledge, there is no real pigeon "hunting" done in this area. In fact, in New Jersey, pigeons are protected and can't be used for training either. Where I live in PA they can be used for training.

I've hunted doves, though I can't get real excited about it, other than it is the start of our bird season. The weather is usually still too warm for me when dove season opens. I've never hunted crows - is that something that you take part in your area? How is it done?

I don't go out of my way to shoot the black ones but will take them if the opportunity arises.

If you do a search you will see some lads here like to hit them hard and of course when the pigeons aren't playing the game they help you keep your eye in

Over here, apart from between the Middle of August until the end of January there isn't a lot to shoot, bird wise. This is why the pigeon ( Wood Pigeon ) is a popular target here, they are classed as a pest and can be shot all year round - this winter they imposed their own closed season on us by staying away from the guns :good:

We decoy them into range mostly, or find their flightlines and take them in flight by getting under one.

Crows are a big pest here too, as I think they are in the South your side of the puddle (Georgia etc). Those are decoyed and called (hand callers only, electronic callers are illegal for shooting here) into range.

Hope this helps!
