bunny bagger
I`ve just put down a deposit on a 222 rifle from a well known gun dealer in Wiltshire and when i asked if they would include screwcuting it in the price they told me that it would cost an extra £185. No thank you i replied, and promptly rang my local rfd who will do it "un proofed" for £35. What prices have you chaps paid and how can anyone justify £
Dunkield
That's about the going rate from an RFD, bit high but not the highest I have heard. They would pay someone about £50-75 + transport to/from the proofhouse + their margin. £35 is pretty cheap, I think I paid £50 unproofed for my CZ last time. JohnGalway
Recently was quoted 80 Euro for just the screwcutting over here, that's for a varmint type barrel. I'd say getting it sent to Birmingham would cost a fortune from here.
Shootingman
£50 in S.Wales- unproofed.
Eddiethegun
£50 in S.Wales- unproofed. I have an Engineering workshop and we screw cut barrels for a few local gunshops, I charge £35 to cut a barrel and fit the moderator ( bore the bush) some rifles come to me stripped of trigger etc but usually I strip everything required for threading included in the price. Cash sale for us total £35. The gunshops take the respocibillity for proofing but this can cost a fortune, I think by law they have to have them proofed if they are selling the rifle but not if they are having it done for a customers rifle but don't quote me on that. Pitty you didnt live near me I would have done it for you. We do all our on a CNC lathe good quality job. Eddie

I just have! You are correct though, it is not an offence to have a screwcut non-proofed barrel but it is to sell one.

Eddiethegun
We centre the bore not the outside as the outside can be all over the place. the thread is cut with a revolving ctr holding the end and a set of soft jaws holding the barrel. £35 it is cheep but never had any complaints yet and we have cut about 100 so far. I have had some lads come in with horrible threads on some quality rifles, these had to be cut back and recrowned and recut. Also shortened a few and recut. northernchris
Eddie Are you a RFD??? Coz even the barrel is classed as a controlled part I do some work for a few local gunshops BUT they have to be in my workshop with the gun as to keep on the right side of the law. Chris Ps i use a 4 jaw chuck and cloak the barrel so it runs true to the bore as they are never concentric to the O.D of the barrel.
