Paul in North Lincs.
my lurcher pup lady nailed her first rabbit this morning....................I was really made up...she coursed it 50 yards over some swathed rape...then the spaniel cam cruising in from the other direction which caused it to jink and run back towards the pup.. she swerved on 360 and wallop..............job done... :good: Really made my day..............................theres always something special your dog has its first catch.............I can rememebr all of my other lurchers over the years as if it was yesturday. Was talking to the breeder yestuday who had cocked up on the age of the pup...I though she was 7.5 mon ths when infact she's only 6.5 months..... not bad going at all for a babbi :look: unfortunately I didnt have a camera but here's a picture of her from last week

Paul Please excuse my ignorance of running dogs, but is it normal to run such a young dog before its bones, tendons are fully grown and strong? The reason I say this is I was advised not to jump my lab in the first year as they can do terrible damage to young limbs under strain, Like I said I have no knowledge of running dogs so am curious to understand a bit more about training Thanks pavman PS yet again I cant see the pic! guess its me? Paul in North Lincs.
Pavman................I'm afraid my pictures are uploaded from my PC and there is a gliche on the board which makes them disappear..................I have posted it again so you can see it.....if only momenaritly! With regards to running your dogs as pups..............you are quite right and hammering a pup at a young age can have adverse effects on the skellital structure, and growth of the pup......however I only walk my pups for an hour and half in the mornings, an a short treck at night,.......... and if they have a little chase while out then all very good...................it nots as if she being slipped on rabbit after rabbit after rabbit...if you know what I mean. If you look a that theory too closely...............you'd never take your pup out!!!!! at 6 months she's only just started to switch on, and by January I should be able do abit more with her .......................nowt got in a hurry...apart from kids! baikal boy
hi paul anytime yor going to be coming over our way send me a pm and we can go for a shine .theres a few things i wud like to pick your brains about aswell mate concerning lamping and getting a dog to go down the beam at the moment i have as near as damn perfected a good daytime dog and courser just by studying from books and as yet havent trained her to the lamp but going to start to very soon somebody once gave me an idea about putting some hi viz like material round a dummy and shine the lamp on it at night and getting her to retrieve that gradually. but anymore ideas wud be much welcome cheers paul. cheers paddy. Paul in North Lincs.
Usually I start off in the garden....throw a ball / toy / dummy down the beam so the dog can see it..............Before you know it the dog will be picking up in the by lamplight..........from this progress to the fields with the toys...and then onto the connies A bunny in lamplight to a lurcher dosn't look any differnt to a day time rabbit..........you only illuminating it....until it moves It terms of training theres not alot you need to do......try it...you'll see....a dog more often than not will pick up it up ...all on its own. They do seem to pick it up easily..............even better if you can go out with someone else, and let you dog see the action while on the slip...............the pup will probably be pulling you arm mind. I've had dogs run down the beam..................dogs that come in from an angle cutting off the victim......we even had one bitch that would stalk sqatters down the beam and snaffle them up whilst still squatting.. As long as you can position youself between where the rabbit is sat...and where its going to run to.......the dog will do the rest. Heres' a couple of pictures to 'wet your appetite' for next season........this was us Jan / Feb time, on one of the rare occasions I took may camera out at night................
