not much has changed then (new member first post)

Haven't been shooting in 25years but having rediscovered fishing it could be next on the cards. I was put on to this site by a total seafishing member . Seems the topics of conversation haven't changed much in 25 years only then replies took a month via the shooting mag press!

re decoys I read the thread with interest about flock coated ones, haven't seen one, sounds good in theory but only if the colour is spot on, which I doubt, suspect it sounds like one of those gimmicks that get shooters reaching for their wallet faster than the woodies buy it.

We used to repaint decoys and repaint again twice a year - and made the breast colour lighter in winter .

The world was always full of new decoy ideas, flappers, lofters etc nowt changes

one tip for newbies is don't tip your decoys out onto the ground, any dew will make them shine and real woodies don't,. Don't use too many deeks in summer 5 can be too many and use as many as you can in winter we used to get a pattern of about 80 down but then they can look very stationery so some full bodied ones were threaded with a rubber band high up inside looped through a wire at each end, (breast to tail) put on a cleft stick they rocked a bit and added some movement to the pattern though a realistic side to side motion was difficult to get.

re Camouflage the real tree stuff looks good close up but unless the quarry is sat on the end of your barrell I reckon you need something with bigger contrast areas or from any worthwhile distance you become a single colour sillohette one of the best jackets I had was one of the cheapest, cheap because shooters didn't like them they had loads of big yellow bands in the pattern but the important thing was it fooled the pigeons I often got away with minimal netting because the yellow contrasted with the big areas of black and broke up the shadow -sport is full of stuff aimed to catch the sportsmans cash but it isnt always effective and don't make your hide too dense in winter, or it looks like a suspicious solid area against a hedge with light otherwise passing through it.

Now where did I put that Archie Coates book...

:good: Hi and welcome some sound advice there sounded just like my Granddad KEEP IT COMEING

and just one tip fill in your profile cheers

sounds like good advice, where u from notabadlad???

:good:

I think I knew your Grannie very well!

I'm from South Yorkshire, used to shoot North Notts, but now living in North Wales. mostly pigeon with 12 bore and often rats with air rifles (guess the .22 v .177 debate still rages, though I think .20 is more available now)

Now I will really sound like a boring old spoilsport...I used to think I had really good hearing, afterall I could hear the barrells vibrate like a tuning fork after a shot couldn't I ? WRONG Back then we thought hearing protection was for clayshooters - anyway who would want to wear something to stop you hearing the sounds of the countryside for 12 hours. I mean it wasn't cool to wear those big ear defenders and the in ear ones got pretty uncomfortable after a while, and a good injun has to be able to hear the snapping of twigs as a buffalo approaches don't he?

Thing is it wasn't the barrells vibrating, it was my inner ear, I now suffer from tinnitus and it doesn't go away, the louder the noise around you the louder the ringing in your ears, difficult to describe but you really do not want it believe me and you get hearing loss too, I can hear blokes voices well enough unless there is a lot of background noise like in a pub, but you try having a conversation in a bar with a good looking squeaky voiced young blonde girl with pert (sorry getting carried away there... :good: ) anyway, hang on to your hearing. ( I SAID HANG ON TO YOUR HEARING!)

I was talking to a customer of mine who owns a clayground he was showing me his hearing protection, jelly moulded to the shape of his own ears, now that sounds comfortable and is something that's new and for the better. The tinnitus by the way was definitely down to shooting, not sticky carpet rock nights in clubs, the specialists can tell from the pitch level affected and they can even tell whether you shoot right or left handed due to a difference in the right/left ear ability levels (think about how your head is when you shoot, one ear points slightly away from the barrells) Anyway that's enough maudling for now, looks to me like the weather around here is better than forecast I may get to do a spot of quiet fishing afterall :D

It,s not just me that's had a lay off then! Hadn't been for 15 years and had a day on some laid wheat with a mate 2 weeks ago, picked up 60 between us and I was hooked again!

Made a rotary thing with 2 decoys on it and a flapper that works off a wiper motor, added a timer off ebay and it looks the business. Visited one of the farms I used to shoot over and have permission for a day over some swathed rape tomorrow, I can't wait :good:

I'll second the hearing protection. I suffer with Tinnitus and it is horrible, don't let it happen to you.

indeed always carry protection when you go out, very useful for keeping the rain out of your barrel. :good:

I tried field target shooting for a while with a couple of Weirauchs but there's nothing quite like the kick in the shoulder, the smell of gun oil burning off mixed with hint of freshly shot papercase and an infusion of still warm woody, better than anything they flog in Boots.

Amazing what wasn't cool not so long ago but is required practice now, thingies, rear selt belts, no smoking.

They've still to find a cure for itchy trigger finger though.
