David BASC
The fire on the Saddleworth Moors demonstrates the dangers of stopping restoration burning to maintain the health of the UK’s heather moorland and control the risks of wild fires. https://basc.org.uk/blog/press-releases/press-releases-press-releases/saddleworth-fire-the-result-of-political-correctness-says-the-uks-largest-shooting-organisation/
wisdom
Good article indeed. It sums it up really.Surely time for the powers that be to recognise that people who have been engaged for decades in traditional management of the countryside, did what they did because it simply worked. JohnfromUK
I read a similar article by Mark Osborne (of William Powell & Co) which explained that in winter when the plants are not actively growing, the plant material dries out very quickly. Therefore the fire risk in winter/early spring before new growth gets under way is much higher than might be expected. It was an interesting point I had not previously appreciated. Unfortunately I don't have a link as it was on William Powell's Facebook.
Pigeon Shredder.
I see that today’s Telegraph has trivialised the fire with a “cartoon” on the front page. Very funny, not.
