If the skin is soft and already peeling, just rub them gently with the sole of your shoe and the staining skin comes off. It does not stop all the staining but minimises it, we get lots of odd looks when we are doing it as the nearest to us is in a bit of a public place and we can be seen shuffling about looking at the ground and then picking things up.
