Fox last night

I got a phone call from Rob (Magman) last night asking if i would like to go over to cheshire for a bit of foxing, well i couldn't refuse as it's 1 of my favorite past times (as you've all probably guessed) . I decided to take my 243 along to give him a shot with a big gun as rob has only got a little one :) ( 17 HMR ), i pulled up at the permission at about 8 o'clock and rob was already there, in the back seat of his truck with the gun out of the window waiting for mr Charlie. As i got out of my truck Rob was just about to shoot a rabbit, he pulled the trigger and then went to pick it up, a nice head shot at about 80yrds ( big exit wound to the side of the head) and then he told me that he'd seen 1 fox trotting down the middle of the road with not a care in the world .( he was a bit pee'd off as he could not shoot it where it was) so i said to rob to get in my truck , i would drive him round and he could use my Rifle.

We started off round a few of the rape stubble fields and didn't see a lot (a few rabbits, but nothing much) and then went into the last stubble field, a nice big field with a piggery at 1 end. I flicked the lamp around the field and spotted a pair of big bright glimmers in the next grass field through a gap in the hedge ( not on robs permission), so i stopped the truck and gave a couple of squeeks to try ang get the fox over to our side of the hedge (without much luck at this stage), so decided to flick the lamp round the field again and then spotted another pair of eyes over by the piggery. I turned the lamp off and said to rob to get out and rest the rifle on the bipod over the bonnet of my truck- to which he willing obliged- i got out and went round to his side with the lamp and started hand squeeking ( which i'm pretty good at, if i do say so myself) and flicked the lamp on, the fox by the piggery was not interested but the 1 that was in the other field had come through the hedge and was running at us like a steam train, it got to about 175yrds out and stopped, Rob flicked the safety catch of the rifle, squeesed the trigger and sent a 75grn Remington Accu-tip on its destuctive way, we heard the thud of the bullet hitting home and out went the lights of the Fox ( well other way round really - lights out and then the thud, if you know what i mean).

Rob walked out to where it was as i drove the truck over, when we got to it there was a BIG hole in the top of the Vixens head ( see photo) and i asked Rob where abouts he had aimed and he said "just under the chin", so the bullet must of gone in, then hit the spine and did a right angle before exploding into its swede - nice humane clean kill.

The look on robs face was priceless , well he had a big grin from ear to ear on his face and looked like a kid in a sweet shop. we did drive round a few more fields and seen a couple of more foxes, but think someone else is lamping the permission next to robs as they were very lamp shy and did a runner as soon as the beam hit em.

Looks as though you were undergunned with the .243. The head is still attached.............

May I suggest .270 to ensure a neat separation of head and torso..........
