Browning
Nothing wrong with a Border Terrier in the beating line Ant, as long as you can keep it under close control, if not then keep it on a lead, I'm sure your dog will enjoy the day out as much as you. Maybe have a quiet word with the 'keeper first though, some shoots only like dogs by invitation.

Blackbart
Get it an orange coat! Its suprising how similar it can look to a fox through the eyes of a 65 year old gun on the shooting line.
fortune
If you can keep it under control, I dont see any problem. I've seen all sorts of dogs out on beating duty. The only thing that I can see is that the small dogs seem to get up close to birds and tend to peg them on the ground before the birds realise the danger and take flight. It's not good when a dog pegs ten or fifteen birds in a days shooting. especially when the guns see more birds coming out with the beating line than they have shot. beatingisbest
We have had terriers in the beating line before, they usually try to go down rabbit holes halfway through a drive. I would keep it on a lead for a few shoot days first, just to get it used to it.
al4x
I've used Jack Russels for years and a keeper near me uses Borders, If you have a terrier that will come back they make great beating dogs, Borders are great as they tend to be steady workers so don't crash through cover which can cause large numbers of birds to go up at once. My terriers were beating from about 4 months old ok not a full day but it got them steady on birds. Its almost a suck it and see situation because obviously terriers will shake things if they catch them, my only problems usually are if the dog sees an injured bird come down and flap then you can have problems. Best way to work them is to use them on the beginning of drives and when walking up hedge lines and when you get towards the end of drives then bung them on the lead. Also if you have a border that goes down holes just make sure youknow where all the badger sets are and keep them under control as thats something you really don't want to have to deal with
