Mrs Sweepy
now i know there may be no answer to this .but it just got me wondering .now that the nights are pulling in my evening walks with sammy seem to start in daylight and end just as the sky is turning to night .and we all know that in a few weeks we will change the clocks again .now living in the country all my walks at some stage are down dark lonely woody lanes. now this has never botherd me before . but last night something did that made me just wonder about my own safety.i never do the same walk each night i always swap them around .so tonight i will not be going that way at all .but i will still be walking down some dark lonely land at some point . and for my own personnel protection i always carry a heavy torch . now in my little village the only real crime we seem to have is when someone puts their litter bags out the day before the dustmen are due .so i think i am quite safe really. but here now comes the stupid qustion if something did happen would sammy try and protect me .or did i watch to many lassie flims as a kid .is it breed into any dog to protect its own . i know that when i and sweepy muck about in the garden like you do. the dogs either take no notice or lick you to death . but if it really came down to it would my little fuff ball turn into a force not to be reckon with xxx suzy
pavman
IMHO your dog would do what it could as it would know mum was in distress, it would also know long before you if you had unwelcome company, However for your own safety and for all your friends on PW peace of mind please stick to well lit routes, take a stout walking stick and personal alarm (boots do them I think) and mobby phone and always make sure someone knows where you are going and when you should be back
MC
It is quite amazing how dogs know you are in trouble, the night in february when I took a dip in the sea. Merlin sat with me on the marsh for a few minutes and then swam the creek to get the other two who I was out shooting with. I am sure that Sammy would get stuck in if needs be. FBF
im not proud to admit this but saeeing as it is relevant im going to. i once had a fight with a guy in the street and he had his dog with him. as we began scrapping the dog yelped and ran away. dont assume your dog isnt going to be as scared as you may be by an assailant. Suffolk shooter
Well I have experienced both ends. My previous dog was a springer x lab (long before the term springador came to mind) and was the kindest, gentlest most intelligent dog I have ever known. He would do anything for me without being trained. He was good with kids and would let them roll all over him etc without a care in the world. One night out walking him down a woodland track near where I used to live, his hackles went up and he growled, now it wasn't winter and/or dark but I couldn't see anything. As we walked on he kept pulling into the treeline and suddenly he started to bark, snarl at something. BEing abit stupid I decided to investigate and found some bloke a bit into the woods with a baseball bat. God knows what he was doing in there with that, but when I threatened to let the dog go he ran a mile. Now the dog I currently have is a pure golden lab and is as stupid as they come (Typical lab) rolls over and likes his tummy rubbed etc. when out walking or even at the bottom of the garden with me or the wife, he really has no clue if anything is nearby whether it's a fox, Muntjac, roe, man/woman/child or even a cat. I wouldn't rely on him if I needed help . Suzy heed Pavman's warning, I know where you live, but just because its your typical quiet rural picturesque village in the daytime, doesn't mean its safe at night, especially in the country where the police don't go, that's where the dope heads, hoodies et al will be up to no good. Be Safe. SS
lurcherboy
No she wouldn't Suzy but I have heard that a can of brake cleaner (about £1.99) aimed at the offender would really hurt and distract them form whatever they had in mind. I believe you could be prosecuted for assault though LB Edited October 11, 2007 by lurcherboy
Highlander
Suzy you don't strike me as a 'victim' but be prepared to look after yourself 'cause I doubt that the dog will (look after you) and by the sound of it you're bigger than him/her! No offence.
