Hi all,

as a complete idiot when it comes to anything mechanical, i am after a bit of advice. I have been and had a drive in a Land Rover Discovery today, that is being sold by a mate of a mate. What i want to know about is the small lever that is the Diff lock. It is an auto model, and i was wanting to know what the diff lock actually is. I notice that there is low, neutral and high.

Does this meen that the diff lock has to be used for everyday driving in either high or low. As when i had a play and put the diff lock **** in the neutral position and put the car in drive it did nt move.

I know these are probably very stupid questions but i really am an idiot when it comes to these things.

Thanks

Well as far as i know, the diff lock or diferential lock, make s all the wheels turn at the same speed giving more grip. when the car is being used on the road it should be in neutral, low for very slow speeds off road and high for faster speeds off road. can't help you any more than that, sorry.

diff lock makes all the wheels turn at the same pace but the car dosent steer aswel when it has diff lock on

does this meen there is something wrong if you have to have the diff lock **** down in the high posistion for the car to move in drive, with it in the neutral posistion and in drive it just revs no movement.

No thats how it should be. Neutral is just the same as any gearbox, no gear selected (no drive)

High selected is for normal driving conditions and low for off road and all that goes with it :D

LB is the resident 4x4 guru so i,m sure he will put me right :good::lol:

Thanks all, for the info. Have got another member of here coming with me tomorrow to have a look. He has just told me that is how his is. He said that he don't know great amounts on them but he has the exact same model as the one i am interested in and he will defiantly know more than i do.

Thanks all
