Down on the military ranges the police were really bad at loosing live ammo on the firing points. They just didn't seem to  count how many rounds they  arrived with, how many they'd shot and how many they had left and  no one picked up any dropped rounds. The army didn't leave any.... we always looked for free ammo.

Whenever I was on the range we were very strict with weapons and ammunition. It all got counted in, all got counted out. Cadets were lined up at the end of training outside the range and the range officer would receive a declaration from each cadet that have no live rounds or empty cases in their possession. Lord knows how the regulars do it, but it doesn’t sound good!

On one training session at a Military range, we found an abandoned rifle in one of the woods. Transpired it had been left by a Cadet a WEEK previously.  At least we only left an odd round of ammo, I don't recall any of us leaving the gun too  !

Must have been a really relaxed range officer that day!
