However, all of those are sort of state monopolies I know a few small parts in some areas can be funded privately, but basically you are talking about large Gov't departments. The problem here is that they need to be under some pressure to perform. If you are free with funding the service will 'bloat', but the taxpayers won't get any more for their money. It's a fine line, but throwing more money at things is not a good answer. 'Productivity and efficiency' are what needs to grow, not just spending. This ^^^^ During my working life I had dealings with many "direct works" departments and know how little "work" they actually do. Also the staff would look at "contractors, see they were paid more, and apply. Most could not manage as to get the money you actually had to work, and lasted no more than 2/3 weeks, Should be renamed direct shirks. Back in the early 80s, many of us, usually employed in the private sector, were brought in by the then Conservative government, to sort out several public sector organisations. It was eye-opening for both sides. I couldn't believe how much waste went on, and they couldn’t believe, until they were shown how, how to operate efficiently, effectively and with economy. Certainly the NHS is, they shouldn't be involved with any political issues, but we know that's not the case. Then all the others are fighting for their slice of the pie, and no doubt a lot is wasted on the various levels of management rather than actual results.
