Mythical Lakeland Grey Fox

When younger and fitter I followed the Lakeland Fell Fox Hound packs and would hear stories and read about the rare uncatchable mythical big fast grey foxes and took them with a small pinch of salt.

However in July not 200 yards from where I live while early morning walking my Lab a big dirty grey fox type animal stepped out of the kerbside undergrowth roughly 50 yards away, it calmly looked me and my dog over and trotted over the road through the gate and off up into the wood.

It was very fox like with a round cat like ribcage, though its body was about 30% longer while its brush unlike a fox was shorter than its body length. It looked scruffy, perhaps casting? and was a dirty grey.

What did I see, an escaped coyote or jackal a feral dog or a real grey fox? I don't think it was a dog because of the small round cat like ribcage.
