snipper
dont touch ox springs ....... worst thing you could do to a springer
artful badger
why's that?? ^^^^^^ meteors are only 8ft/lb so might need a bit more power to kill anything humanely, i shot a pigeon with my old one and it drowned in the river rather than by being shot

vole
Yep,its an old 8ft lb one tho its not been chrono,d. do the ox springs damage them then?
tosspot
John Bowkett takes these up to 12 ft/lb and they are as smooth as silk - do a search pretty sure it ain't using an Ox mainspring though
Axe
Pop yourself onto http://www.airgunspares.com John Knibbs and order a main spring. Not very expensive and brings the Meteor up to 11ft/lb. Well at least it did on mine old Mk2 when Iserviced her 2 years back. I would suggest you also order a breach seal as well. vole
Thanks guys!! Hope to pick up the pocket rocket end of the week.
SteveieP
As well as a breach seal, you might want to consider a piston seal & a piston buffer washer (depending on the model). The buffer washer in my old mark 4 had degraded to crud over the years. A few quid more now on the internals means you won't have to do another major overhaul for years. Also watch out for that spring! There's a surprising amount of pre-tension to get it in place, which is how it makes up the power on a physically small rifle with a short piston stroke. The Meteor will do the job you have in mind. Well mine still does & I've had it for 33 years.
SAVAGE HMR
Id avoid the OX Springs if I were you. Heard alot of people saying they were ****. Edited November 21, 2007 by Axe Removed swearing
Big_Sam
My cousin fitted an ox spring to a mk6, and the power never went up
vole
Got my Meteor. The dealer only wanted £20 for it so am delighted. The barrel needs a good clean but it seems to work.I think I will let Mr Squirrel have a freebie if there is one in the trap in the morning. It put a pellet a respectable depth into a paperback.I plan to get busy with all your info and get tuning the little feller the next weeks and only then will I shoot live stuff, apart from offing trapped squiddle. Its the same model i was bought in1976, £21. Ideal for my kid to learn on.Thanks guys
vole
Does anybody know what mark this is please? Same as one bought new in mid 70,s i think. Ta !!
tuck1
Excellent stuff. I have now aqquired an old Weirauch HW35 which I have been posting about elsewhere. Maybe "retro" air rifles will become the fad again, and we'll be sitting on a small fortune!
SteveieP
Yep, sure looks like the Mark4 with it's original open sights & original colour / finish to the stock. Can I recommend that, if you're going to put scopes on it, that you either get a 1 piece mount or a scope arrestor block to use with a 2 piece mount. They're little ******* for scope-creep
tosspot
try one of these for that real retro look http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BSA-REFLEX-AIR-RIFLE...1QQcmdZViewItem

Or over my eyeball if you were the woodie/starling i used to pop.Taken the scope advice ta.may invest one day but new internals 1st methink. thanks chaps. Opal
Id avoid the OX Springs if I were you. Heard alot of people saying they were ****. If I can hit/kill hundreds of rats up to 25 yards with an Ox mainspring in my old Meteor then there ain't nothing wrong with them. Don't believe everything you hear.
