Chard
A 10% "thank you" is perfectly adequate, and nothing if the service was ****. All this 20% nonsense is a byproduct of the loadsamoney flash ******* "look at me, I've made it" culture. If you start down the 20% road, the "norm" will be 30% in no time at all. To be brutally honest, the service in most places is no more than OK anyway, they're lucky to get 10% :good:
J@mes
usually a fiver that is folded under my debit card when the waitress brings the chip/pin machine to the table. BUT only if the service is good!

Bagsy
I'll continue as I have always done........ 10% if I think the service and food was particularly good Round up a quid or two for the pizza delivery (nearer the two for the guys who deliver the Chinese - I'm sure the Chinaman only employ ex crims, they're all mean looking mothers ) 20% for my professional hair stylist as he does such a good job (as noticed by the Essex mob - I didn't think you cared ) 0% to the spotty Suffolk Shooter lookalike at McD's who always seems to drop my change when using the drive through

Ssshh, don't mention the Sombrero, 3Amp had it and thought he'd managed to get rid of it on Sunday. Dr_Scholl
15% if the service is so so. 10% if the service is really bad. 20% if the service is good. Both of my sisters are waitresses at the local Outback Steakhouse, so i'm more than familiar with the **** they have to put up with at that place. I went to the Outback Steakhouse in Basildon recently (boring Chamber of Commerce lunch). The one in Basildon is run by a New Yorker.........think about it........... So that's Australian food, cooked in Essex in a restaurant run by a Yank !!!

Ferret Master
My friends and I left a reasonably sustantial tip between us last time we went out for a meal as a way of thanks for dealing with some abusive middle aged men that though calling a group of teenage girls who were on their own going to the toilet '******* chimpanzees' who shouldn't be allowed to eat in an adult restaurant. The manager and waitresses told the half a dozen rude men that their behaviour was unsuitable for a family restaurant and would not be tolerated if they persisted. My friend who's party it was had a phone call the next day saying that they had been kicked out after we left and would we like to make an offical complaint. Top marks Pizza Express. starlight32
Ok guys, I don't get out much and I'm not clued up with the latest trends in tipping when out for a meal. What's the right thing to do these days and is there a set amount we should tip? Am I old fashioned or bonkers for not leaving a tip if not happy and have they now become the 'norm' and expected in this country? Are the PW faithful a generous bunch or do you make them work really hard for a bit extra? I always try and leave something on the bedside table for any lucky girl
