Devon Fox
What choke would you use for buckshot etc, would be interested in your thoughts, its a back up for the rifle, as we sometimes end up with foxy comming in at full steam for some close up action!!! JohnGalway
I wouldn't, too few pellets.
henry d
Buckshot is too big for a fox, stick to BB`s/1`s IMO
Devon Fox
Sadly i have bought a couple of cartons, i have been using 5's on a full choke which does the job close up, what choke would you use though?
Floating Chamber
Buckshot is too big for a fox, stick to BB`s/1`s IMO Spot on! LG (6 pellets) or SG (9 pellets) could go right round him!
pavman
Sadly i have bought a couple of cartons, i have been using 5's on a full choke which does the job close up, what choke would you use though? oooh 5's as with all shots it depends on distance, but BB's on half choke should cover most situations at close ish range 70 per Oz, however not recomended for your criter, stick with the tool for the job and take a loss on the big stuff for a lesson learnt may be the best way forward
bobt
I homeload AAA for fox, and use them through 1/4 and half chokes. works out to 60 yds.
Hunter
Its not worth asking, I also have buckshot and asked what choke I could use, I also got all the answers of what other shot and choke I should use instead If its for close foxy, use whatever choke you wish. From what I eventually gathered, with lead shot, you can use any choke, its only steel shot that you have to be careful with.
Hunter
I homeload AAA for fox, and use them through 1/4 and half chokes. works out to 60 yds. Unless its bigger then a 12b, I would be very wary of suggesting long shots like that on this forum
JohnGalway
I patterned some SG, and also AAA at 40 yards. Used mostly open and 1/4 chokes I think. Being very honest now, they patterned rubbish for me. Especially the SG. The AAA wasn't totally horrendous but still BB beat it hands down at that range from my shottie, yours may be diffferent. I had printed out scale size of a foxes head and chest facing me. Missed with all five SG shots, maybe gave him an earing in one ear. Five shots! To be more honest I could easily see a side on fox being missed quite easy too, think about it, he's not gonna hang around unless you get lucky and nail him with a pellet from the first barrel. If you want to use then no one can stop you, I don't believe anyone here is trying to rain on your parade, but, if you DO decide to go ahead with it then get some decent sized paper or plastic sheets (old feed bags from farmers, cut them open) and pattern them through your gun. I remember reading here before about larger sized lead shot deforming through a tighter choke, it was a long time back, that's why I went for the more open chokes. But, do experiment a bit yourself if you're determnined to go ahead with it. It may also be worthwhile visiting the manufacturers website or ringing them as they may be able to advise you better, and perhaps more safely than me! Reason I got those two types of carts is after seeing an Australian video with Andre Georgescu nailing foxes with AAA and SG. Let us know how ya get on
Hunter
Good post! I aggree, SG is only suitable for close range use. I have good results up to 20m. I tend to only carry BB's latley, my box of 50gram 1's havent been touched yet. Large shot should really have some form of buffer between it. This helps with consistancy. If you have permision on your FAC you buy a cartridge with even bigger pellets
Baldrick
I still have a load of Express 36g SG for fox, which worked very well out of full choke at up to 20 yards. However I switched to Express 42g #1s, which even through 1/4 and 3/4 choke allow me more range and more consistency. You can use SG for fox if you know the limits, but it is unpredictable stuff.
