Another night vision "spotting" excercise

It's a Yukon Digital Ranger Video Kit. The video part has a very bright screen that will light up your face for the quarry to see it like NV for them

Unfortunately the narrow field of vision on five mag means it a bit of a struggle to include the shooter in the video. During the maouvering to get into position I inadvertently lose aim, and the gunman doesn't know when I'm in position for the shot. We sort of decided it better to stop trying to include him in the frame.

The bulb had just blown on the Deben Atom he would have been using on his gun - so we had to work with hand holding a five cell Maglite which sort of made things a bit difficult - and bloomy.

PF25 - I've not done any ratting, but see the results you will get if you "google" Forum night vision and select the "pages from the UK button.

John, It's great fun.

Dazza - the link din't work but I'd guess you were asking if it was the second one from the botton?... YUP ustasshop is exactly where I got mine

A decent SD memory card will save you wondering if you have any room on it, rather than mess up your night eyes trying to check how much space you have left on the card. 1 GB should give you about an hour of record time so you can go home and edit it with windows Movie Maker or some other video editing software. The card is removeable and fits in most PC card readers.

Be advised the screen is VERY bright, we eventually settled on putting the whole thing in a balaclava so that the two lenses poked out through the eye holes, while the nose hole provides access for the controls of the monucular. Also be advised that it definitely a fiddler job, think of an adjustable pa/focus scope that is very sensitive to distance - you will always be "on" the focus when scanning.

To sum up it's main appeal - I suggest it's ideally sited to a pair of shooters. One spotting and feeling usefull and the other doing the shooting then "swapsies" Our sort of rule is kill then swap - unless there is a "stand" to be had.

I think you've already tried it but have been doing so much reading over the past while... Did ye try a bit of disco gel (strobe light filter thingy) over the eye piece to take some of the brightness away, heard red and green are being used. Also heard of folks getting real cheap portable DVD players and using those for the screen but appreciate you've got the video add on  I'm looking forward to some fiddling when I get mine :rolleyes:

Your method of use it what I had in mind also. Though I will be trying it solo too, and hopefully the IR game cam I got will be able to do a bit of spy work for me :P

How do FB, congrats on your new purchase  The Remington website says here that a .223 VL SS thumbhole is 1 in 12 twist.

May I add damn you for picking that rifle, I now have competition in the "Rifle with whorish good looks" category  She'll shoot well for ya I'm sure B)

Further editing this to politely ask if you boys can find a fox and record him on NV B)

Another edit (had a few drinks) to say the Remington page says you can put 5 .223 rounds in the magazine, unless they;ve changed it I am 99.9% sure I can put 6 .223 rounds in mine.

No, mine is 1 in 12. As far as I know, and according to their website, they don't do them in 1 in 9. I figure 1 in 12 is the best twist rate for general varminting, it'll shoot the 50/55 grainers just fine. Remember you have an advantage over me that you can get into reloading should you wish to, then you could develop your own load to suit the rifle.

I use Federal 50 grain hollow points, they do the job and aren't too expensive. Every rifle is different though, when you get yours it might take around 200 rounds for it to settle down and get shooting properly, don't worry, just run her in right, don't heat it up and bang away at plenty of paper you'll get there in no time
