hi

i bought one back in july and once you can get your head around the instructions it takes a quaility picture

the macro feature is brilliant but i would recommend a tripod

the only down side is the bulkyness its bigger than my digital camcorder

i still take a small 6MP compact digital out with me most of the time because you can just slip in your pocket

I am looking at the Lumix TZ3.

10x OPTICAL zoom and Leica lens.

Being tight, I am waiting for the prices to come down just a tad and I will get one.

I spent about 20 minutes talking to a pro photographer the other day who confirmed what we kind of already know, it's the lens that is critical, the electonics just crunch what comes through that, and there are very few, if any, better glass manufacuters than Leica - so that will do for me :)

Like this:

And this seems to be the price to beat (including 4Mb SD card)

I got one early this year, even if you leave it in auto mode, it generally takes fantastic photo's 99% of the time, next year I am going to buy an SLR and fast lens for indoor sports photography, as that is the only place the 9600 has not been able to cope well, dont get me wrong its ok just not quite good enough.

Another vote for dpreview - I use it all the time.

Fuji cameras are generally very good, hwoever it all depends what you want to do with it. Personally I'd say if you can run the extra expence I'd go for a DSLR.

You can get an entry level canon with 18-55mm lens for £369 this gives you a good start then can add additional lenses as you bank account allows - they will take older manual lenses too but you lose some functionality. The 350D is pretty much the same spec as the 20D which was the mainstay of events photographers until the 30 & 40D's superceeded it. For prices have a look at warehouse express. I've managed to get Jessops to match their prices in the past, although I've not bought anything since April this year & they've reported losses since then.

I used to have an earlier version of the Fuji - which was great, cumplicated and took v good pics. Now have the Panasonic Lumix - it's very good and has more added features, bells and whistles. On balance I found the Fuji better to use on things like safaris or taking pics when I'm out shooting.

hard choice though, as both are good cameras.

my problem with it was, it felt cheap, the pictures were pretty good, but it was the size of an SLR but isnt and also has no OIS.

The Lumix is slightly larger than a compact camera when off, takes excellent pictures and being a bridge camera it gives you a massive range of zoom from a macro about 4.5cm to 10x optical zoom which is good when combined with the Optical Stabilisation. The panasonic i am reffering to is this one: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Pana...onic_dmctz3.asp

dont worry its not got so many mega pixels, it makes little practical difference, this camera is still 2x the resolution for any Full HD tv, so you could crop it pleanty of times without too much loss in quality. More importantly the panasonic lenses are good

Also consider this canon http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Cano...non_sx100is.asp

All excellent camera's with basically the same 'power' lense, better quality lenses, smaller and nicer feeling imho.

Funny you should say canon because what about the S3IS?

never used one, but seems a little low megapixel for the modern camera's, however very long lense with stabilisation on the lense not sensor, which is a nice touch for those long zoom shots.

In reality you don't need too many pixels. Unless your doing a lot of cropping and blowing pictures up 6M pixels is far more than you'll ever need (I still use one 6.3M slr that I have and I regularly blow up pictures to larger than A2). These days it just seems to be a case of getting more in to show off to your mates...but if it was the difference betweeb 6Mpixels and a good sized lens and 9Mpixels and a little lens, go for the larger lens! :)

Stuart - you not tempted to save some money and just go for the TZ2 - if you look here (I did a comparison on dpreview between the two http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_po...3&show=all) there isn't much between them and you may well save a bundle - that said I don't know the prices and even if they still make the TZ2.

If anyone wants a link to a flickr site that shows 100's of pictures taken with the TZ2 (as my brother and his wife travel the world) pm me.

i agree to a degree, if i had to choose between this fuji and a nikond40 (6mp slr) it would obviously be the nikon, despite its 3mp handy cap, however given the small price difference between the 6mp and 8 or 10 mp versions i see no reason not to go for them. I find the 10mp on my slr useful if i have a short lense on and need to crop and then blow something up. But SLR's are a completely different ketttle of fish.

Yep I agree, if there isn't much in it price wise and the lenses are the same size, go for the higher pixel count...just don't let it rule your desicion when comparing against other camera's, as there are a lot more variables I would look at first (post the ~6MP count).

Personally I have always stuck with Canon SLRs, I feel the CMOS sensors work better for colour and resolution, plus I put a lot of money on the alloy chasis...shame they didn't get their multi-colour sensitive (Foveon) pixels out before Sigma (who then got the copyright for ~10yrs - shame they just can't make decent camera bodies!!). Apparently Canon & Nikon were only 3 months behind! When the copyright runs out on the Sigma Foveon technology you'll see Canon and Nikon bring out a new revolution in camera's as 10Mp cameras will effectively turn into 30Mp cameras colour wise.
