WGD
Ok, here's the question - how fair is it for a single dog to be in a kennel? My situation is as follows, another dog will be coming sooner or later (OH breaking down gradually). Have a pet lab in the house at present and two kids (4 & 2). Looking for an older dog, say 1 - 3 years, so the circumstances under which the dog has been raised will have to be a consideration but the new dog will not be a pup. Options to house the new dog are: 1. New dog in house all the time - OH not too keen on having something else to keep an eye on while I'm at work; fair(ish) comment I suppose. 2. New dog in kennel/run during the day and house at night when I'm around. 3. New dog in kennel/run all the time. I do not intend putting the pet lab in the kennel, at 7 she is perfectly settled in the house and she is a family pet however, I am concerned that putting a single dog in a kennel whilst there is activity roundabout (kids in the garden etc) is effectively excluding it from being part of what is going on and I am concerned that a single dog is lonely when left in the kennel leading to nuisance noise, chewing etc etc. Thoughts, opinions and experiences welcome. gdunc
A mate's cousin who shoots on our local syndicate has a working lab sleeps in house dog and has just bought a part trained kenneled bitch. Whilst i'm aware that dogs and bitches are best kept apart most of the time, I feel that the kennel bitch will be acutely aware of the other dog going into the cosy house to sleep on the couch whilst she is put out in the kennel. I'm of the opinion that you either kennel your dogs or have them indoors - not one in one out. Just my 2p. Incidentally our pup is kenneled through the day (not so much during this winter) and sleeps in the kitchen at night. I'll be getting another in the summer and she'll be the same. I would tend to agree - I'm not comfortable with the "one in, one out" scenario but wondered what others thought. My other concern is, per my original post, the likelihood of a single dog getting fed up in a kennel. I would ordinarily just have the dog in the hosue but the OH is taking more convincing than I thought so a kennel, at least for daytime, might be a way round it. roadkill
in my eyes the family pet gets the house and the working dog in the kennel
pavman
My Lab bitch has been on her own outside for 3 years with no real problems as long as she is worked or has walks when not working, I have a very big garden so she has time out the run and that must help but apart from taht they can sleep like cats so dont beat yourself up about it, just take good care and all will be fine unless its a squeaker

Cushat
Our lab bitch is kennelled on her own most of the time - all day when I'm at work and she sleeps out there at night. I used to worry about leaving her all day on her own but there was a spell when she'd come into work with me and she'd sleep 99% of the time anyway! She's in the house in the evenings when we're in and she gets plenty of exercise so she seems happy enough. In fact, when I come back in from a walk in the mornings she runs back to her kennel with her tail wagging and never makes any attempt to go into the house.
