Dr W
I'm think of buying a 92 RR classic for a bit of fun etc so I was wondering if any members have had one and if they have any tips for what to look out for when buying one. Please no 'you should buy something Jap' comments as I've already pretty much made up my mind and now want to know how to spot a good one and avoid bad uns. Any help would be gratefully received Cheers
Big_Sam
If is is just for a bit of fun then look for a V8. The diesels were a bit on the low powered side in some of them.
Dr W
Was looking at a 3.9 petrol but one that had been converted to LPG so I could actually use it on the motorway without needing a fuel mortgage. LPG would be sensible, check the location of the tank though to ensure it wont hit anything if off roading.

EvoCars
even on gas they are very expensive to run, 15 to 20 mpg max and less mpg on gas so only works out a little cheaper, pretty much all that age are rotten or on their way to be, I do like them, but look at it more of ahobby car to restore than an everyday reliable car
roadkill
yes go british , japs are only good for the fast cars
Dr W
Well I suppose 15 mpg at 50p or less a litre is not bad about same as my golf. It's really only a bit of fun and something to tinker with but if I can find a clean one then no reason can't be everyday motor. I actually only want one to play with and get used to until I can afford the RR sport (ah drool), I understand the comments about Jap reliabilty but you'll never persuade me one is better than a Sport in any way. Just need to start saving those pennies.
BSA Shaun
Try and get an overfinch, then you really will have a handful! One of the biggest rot area on a RR is the tailgate, which is of course split, the bottom rusts like wildfire! Parts are ebay-able and there are loads of donor cars
Dr W
see the war on rust Thanks for the link, was an interesting read. I hope the days on the road are more than the days it's going to spend on axel stands

BSA Shaun
In that case go for the normal v8 mate, the diesels are like tractors on the calssic
me and my lad
the only real thing to watch on them is the air suspension, make sure it drops and works as it should do. other than that for the age you are looking at just the usual tired/worn bits if you get a petrol get rid of the cats and stick tubular manifolds on it, did this on my last one and it does make a difference also worth trying AON for insurance, think you might be able to get it on a classic policy for peanuts
