Gully
I've been beating on a local shoot for some of this season with a view to being a gun next year. Saturday was the beater's day and my first go at shooting pheasants - almost a year to the day since getting my licence. Not many birds came my way, and the ones that did I'm ashamed to say I missed. On the first drive after lunch though I got one of the end pegs. As the drive got underway, about four muntjack came out of the woods causing merry hell among the dogs. A few seconds later, the cry of 'fox' went up and a big dog fox came out of the woods, straight towards the guns. A couple of shots were made at it further down the line but the field was on a slight hill down towards the beaters and it wasn't very safe. The fox headed straight towards me and ended up running between me and the gun next to me. Once it was behind us it was a safe shot and I nailed him side on in the chest at about 25 yards. I was worried about not killing him cleanly but he dropped stone dead from 30g of No 6. Despite the lack of pheasants - final bag was about 30, it goes down as one of the best days I've had. Pics from a camera phone and the gun's tucked under my arm as I take it, hence the barrels in the pic. So, got my first fox then but the first pheasant will have to wait until next season. Anyone give me any tips for pheasants? I must have been reading them totally wrong as I got 45/50 in my local clay shoot yesterday.

Chances are you were missing them behind.
tulkyuk
well done on the fox, as for the pheasants give them more lead ( as you swing through say to yourself Tail, belly, beak, sky, bang - it should give you the right time frame)- also remember a pheasant is always speeding up as it flys past/away/to you, but clays are slowing down not long after leaving the trap. Devon Fox
I would bet that you were a)stopping the gun or b)lifting your bonce(nodding dog syndrome!) Birds in the wind can be faster than clays, and no two are the same, so swing through them, hard to miss infront of them! Nice write up, and getting a fox is a real treat! Gully
Yeah, I guessed not enough lead. I think they're deceptive as they're so much bigger than a clay. I've not had any problems with pigeons so maybe it is the size. It turns out I took high gun at my local shoot, so it really was a weekend of firsts

Sundowner
Good show mate, I know how you are feeling as I have downed my first 5 pheasants a couple of weeks ago (also nearly a year after getting my SGC). The fox gotta count for somethin though, right?
