ShaggyRS6
Sorry for all the questions, but you know me, its how I learn. So the wife says I can have a Ferret Court, wish she had told me a few days back, but nevermind. People have offered to build me one, and please be sure it IS very much appreciated, but I have decided to have the one below custom made. Thanks again for all the offers of help. Now the purchase does pose some issues that can hopefully be easily sorted. Firstly I have asked the company in question to change the doors round so I can access it easily baring in mind its location. So first the pics. I have 2 options, both I think will mean either trimming the tree on the left or removing it completely, i will take advice on that from you guys please. i am not a gardener. The Conifur will be going whatever happens. Gonna rope that to the landy, cut a v, then saw so it falls toward the Landrover. The picture below shows an 8 foot long version x 4 foot wide. Going back to my 2 options I can have either 6 foot long x 4 foot, or make it 7 x 4. What do you think? The sleeping quaters will remain the same size, its just the run will get bigger by a foot. This picture depicts the 6 foot version in the configuration I want it. This piccy shows the side against the garage Another view of the 6 footer The next pictures show where i plan on putting it, with crude measurements. The camera is pointing East, so no direct sunlight in the summer until 18:00. Its more seltered from the Rain and wind also. Another view And another i will obviosuly make some ladders and housing qauters for the ferts. Do i need to Sawdust the entire run though? I have seen these courts with and without Sawdust. Anything else I should consider? Thanks for the help as always.
Ferret Master
I just have sawdust in the cub and bare decking in the court. FM
lurcherboy
Only one thing to say here Lee, security. I appreciate that you don't live on a main road but the court will be a bit exposed there won't it? I have placed mine so it has shade from 2 trees in the summer and in the winter I add side panels to it to give them shelter from the wind. garyb
Not to mention the stink, and the complaints from the neighbours behind that fence in the summer
ShaggyRS6
Security will be ok LB, gonna whack padlocks on it. The whole Garden has security lights around it too. Is the smell gonna be an issue?
lurcherboy
The smell will be minimal if you stick to using dried food in anything like warm weather, give fresh food if you want at night and remove any leftovers in the morning, clean the court weekly. I also clean their chosen toilet area every other day. Hanging fly papers around the court well out of range of the frets will keep the fly action down too. Ferrets do smell and I think some people notice it more than others. For instance, when I drop some rabbits of to the local post office, the woman can always tell if I have handled the ferrets that morning LB
ShaggyRS6
Jordan cleans his poo twice a day To be honest he does stink close up, but nothing like he used too. Someone was telling me they stink more when stressed, maybe this is why is ponged a bit more when we first got him.

When one comes out of a hole after meeting a Stoat or worse they bloody hum mate I don't mind the smell and it's the same for me with dogs, especially when they're wet, they remind me of rich tea digestives. Cranfield
Perhaps a fence panel angled from the back fence towards your garage and put the court behind it, that would shield it from the road a lot more. Don't underestimate the risk of theft and padlocks don't prevent that. A serious question. Could you locate it in your garage ?
ShaggyRS6
Cant go in the Garge Cranny. And as for seeing it from the road, you cant see the road from my front garden. It a private driveway to where i took that picture, about 50M in length. LB can explain
lurcherboy
It is well secluded Cranfield and maybe I am being over cautious but I would feel better if no one could see the court. LB

ShaggyRS6
I have solved the rotting wood base issue too. I have ordered some Stable Mats, Rubber ones they use for horses. Whck that down in both sections covered in saw dust
Cranfield
I would also suggest a few bricks round the base to lift it right off the ground, this will help reduce dampness. Wait and see where they choose as their toilet area, and then just put a small mat under the sawdust there if you want to. Rubber mats across the whole floor area could hold rainwater under them and prevent the floor drying out naturally (which it does).

flash
i have a very similar court, although mine was self converted from a B and Q shed, we cover the flaw with wood shavings and straw, and we have had no problem with rotting. the sleeping area is a small rabbit hutch stuffed with towels and blankets. althought quie often they wont sleep in there prefering either straw or the open air lol. one of there favourite sleeping places is an ola clay plant pot with a hole in the side stuffed with straw, simple but they like it, they build a nest inside it. cheers flash
ShaggyRS6
Flash, how much straw and sawdust should i put in that run? And do I put anything in the sleeping qauters if i just fill it up with blankets?
flash
put a layer of about 1cm to 2cm of shavings on the floor with a layer of loose straw over that. put it in originally so its not compacted, as it makes it more interesting for them. you can leave this in for a good few weeks, just clearing out the areas they are using as a toilet. its gives them something to burrow around in, and to sleep in if they so wish. in our bedding area we filled it loosely with old towels, as the loose packing allows them to burrow around in it, and make a suitable nest in the middle. dont stuff it to full as they wont all be able to get it etc. for 1 ferret in a small nest box, 1 small towel should surfice. ShaggyRS6
Cheers Flash. Will do just that. I guessing if I do it this way they wont need the sleeping boxes? Edited February 2, 2008 by ShaggyRS6
