Jonnyni
Got it from a website/forum while trying to check up on security issues with 'Home PCs' after gettin broadband at home and was quite shocked at what people/companies can find out about ya over the internet. I have been doing loads of research into Personal Firewalls, Router based firewalls, Windows XP's own firewall not to mention all the various virus checkers/scanners, spyware, adware etc etc etc. Sorry went off on one there Dazza the answer to your question lies within the program, right click then goto properties the website is in the URL. MadSpringer
Hi Jonnyni If your after a good personal Firewall try Zone Alarm, there is a free version that is good but it's worth the purchase for the Pro version. http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp If you have an old PC knocking around you can turn it in to a standalone Firewall using Smoothwall Express (Free) It's a powerful piece of software, worth a look if your into tinkering with computers . No need for an extra monitor on the desk, everything is controled via a web interface. http://www.smoothwall.org/ Cheers
white fox
We use a wireless broadband router (netgear) which also includes a hardware firewall. I was told the software firewalls are no good and that we should only use a hardware device. The idea of using an old computer as a fireawall is a good idea. Someone should put together an unbiased recommendation of what is best practice at minimum costs to help all us all.
Jonnyni
This has absolutly **** all to do with pigeons before any of you start but since we all use computers on Pigeonwatch here ya go......... I am downloading using P2P download site's so I have been researching and using quite a few personal firewalls and broadband routers and have had difficulty with download speeds with certain ones. I am nearly at the stage where I am happy with my setup and a mate of mine (and a forum member) have been hard at work trying to get the best performances out of our computers (which he built to v.high standards). There is differing arguments out there for the router/personal firewall debate but basically its what you trust yourself and keeping the virus protection up to date is the best advice I can give yas all. Here is my setup at the moment. An ordinary USB ADSL modem (too much hastle configuring a router for P2P) F.Prot Antivirus software Norton (for email only) Sygate personal firewall (Zonealarm does not work with MSN Messenger or Sharaza P2P) Ad-aware 6.0 for (Ad-aware is THE award winning, multi-trackware detection and removal utility (designed for Windows 98 / 98SE / ME / NT40 / 2000 / XP Home / XP Pro) that will comprehensively scan your memory, registry, hard, removable and optical drives for known Datamining, aggressive advertising, Parasites, Scumware, Keyloggers, selected traditional Trojans, Dialers, Malware, Browser hijackers, and tracking components.) VERY USEFUL This is totally unbiased and is just my experience after 4 weeks of hard work. I will update it later if things change. Anyone can PM me about P2P file transfers but please Google it first (Bit torrents and the likes of sharaza, DC++ and WinMX) JUST GOGGLE THEM. Hope this helps some of you out there it has certainately help me. In addition check out your own Internet Vulnerability by going to Shields Up This will tell you about your open ports which hackers can use to get into your PC. Jonnyni
Hi Ern I have been quiet on PW for a while and havn't been in PW arms since I got my new computer because i have been finding out about the things i am talking about above because after getting broadband I want to make full use of it. Luckily I have a mate who knows his stuff and he gave me a bump start but the answers to anyone questions lies within the forums used in Sharaza and www.suprnova.org (there is no e in suprnova) etc its worth the effort to find out. You really can find out alot about computers and their powers and there weaknesses. The original start of the topic was sshhhhh I thought this would be food for thought.........
