chokes& patterns

Hi All Its Smokey, One of my shooting buddies & i have got a difference of opinion.

At the moment my normal gun a Browning GTI i use is only firing one barrel ( off to the menders next week)

I normally shoot half & full choke mainly because i can't get the full choke out.

Anyway at the moment i am using my other gun a Winchester Diamond grade sporter, the GTI has got 30inch barrels and the winnie 28, choked quarter & half (his idea)

I know i must do a pattern test but i'd like to know what some of you think first.

When we were shooting yesterday they were coming in well (awsome), i'd got my magnet out at 25 yards and birds that were just skirting it well in range i was pillar casing some of them but they carried on. i couldn't believe it.

I'm thinking with the quarter or half chokes there too much spread or bigger gaps in it , does the extra 2 inches make that much difference, surely if i'm back ending them with a tighter choke i would miss them completely ( less spread) tried 6 & 7and halfs.

My mate says quarter and half is plenty, but i like a tighter coke in the top barrel what do you think

I musn't grubble as i finished up with 91 but my mate and the keeper sharing a hide had 112 many thanks Smokey :good:

I think with modern ammo there is a lot of rubbish talked about chokes. For years i liked at least one barrel full choke for my main sport ... wildfowling. However with the ban on lead shot and the change over to steel , I had the chokes taken down to i\c and 1\4 on 2 of my guns one of which I also use for pigeon shooting. I consistantly kill birds just as far away as i ever did with full choke. Yes on paper you will get a few extra yards of range with full choke , but in pratice i do not think it makes a lot of difference..... except maybe giving you confendence for a long range shot.

If fact the removal of choke greatly improved the pattens with large shot sizes for geese.
